floatie toy at the beach?

We are going to the beach for a week next week (yay!) so i was reading the post below about what to take and a few people listed a floatie toy for DC to sit in.  I have 1, but wasn't planning on taking it b/c I can't really see DD being happy/safe in a floatie in the waves.  plus i fear the water will be too cold for her to "swim" in.  Am I wrong/over thinking this?  Are they actually worth using?

    I would assume that those types of floaties should only be used at the pool.

    that's what i thought, but i've seen in posted here and i had 2 IRL friends mention taking it.  i was starting to wonder if i was being weird or over protective.

    I would take it. The waves aren't so intense around here, anyway, and if she liked being in the water the floatie thing would be nice to have her in, I think.

    I'm taking one, but we'll be at the Gulf and there are no waves. Smile We'll definitely use it in the pool, too.
