Spitting up vs. vomitting

How can you really tell a difference?

After DD's first morning feed, she acted like she needed to burp. I sat her up, and she literally threw up (spit up?) what looked like everything she had eaten. It didn't even phase her, and she went right back to eating after we cleaned everything up. Should I be concerned?

Re: Spitting up vs. vomitting

  • DS has always spit up a TON.  Our pedi says that vomiting is projectile -- like will go a couple of feet or more.  That has only happened once or twice with DS.  But the "volume" of spit-up does not necessarily mean vomiting.

  • yep, agree with PP

vomiting will have lots of pressure behind it

  • I wouldn't be concerned.  DD did this several times until she was 3 months.  It never seemed to bother her or affect her eating.  I'd probably be concerned if it was more frequent or if she was showing signs of distress.  It just created a whole lot of laundry for me. :)
  • The major difference between the two is the amount that comes out. There is typically pressure associated behind vomit as well, but the biggest difference is quantity.
  • Often when DS vomits he has it come out of his nose too and it is projectile.  Usually with vomit he will have NOTHING on him and we end up taking a shower and cleaning the carpet.  Fun times.

  • Slightly off topic, but we figured out there are 2 factors that cause DD to spit up LARGE amounts.

    1. Milk is too warm

    2. She is falling asleep and not completely swallowing it. Then when we sit her up to burp it all comes out.

Nope.  Not quantity.  DS spits up even a few ounces at a time (which typically means he needs to eat again soon).  That's just spit-up.  The difference between spit-up and vomiting is vomiting is typically projectile. That info comes from my pedi.
