Ok, maybe that's an exaggeration. But my DS spits up a lot! Despite being on soy formula, adding rice cereal to bottles AND Zantac for acid reflux, we will go through 3-4 burp clothes, 2-3 bibs and sometimes several shirts a day. Daycare even comments about how much he spits up (and those ladies have 15 years experiences)
I'm sure part of it is that now he's moving more, so he is sitting up and wanting to move, roll, etc. We try to keep him still after eating, but even 2-3 hours later he will spit up. It is frustrating and is causing him repeated ear infections (he is on infection #6 at 4.5 months old and will need tubes next month). I'd really love to know what is wrong?! He's gaining weight well so the Dr's don't seem concerned which is additionally frustrating. It has to be hard on his little throat/tummy, and is hard on his dear parents!
We have tried other AR medications, like Prilosec, but that worked worse. Should we talk to the Dr. about trying other formulas? IT seems late to be doing that after 4.5 months of being on soy. They put him on soy because he was colicky with breast milk (even on dairy-free diet) and regular formula) Also - how do you know if your LO has a soy allergy?
I've heard they should be "growing out of this" by now, but his seems to be getting worse and I'm at the end of my rope as to what to do. PLEASE HELP!
Re: Spitting up a gallon!
My DS (just turned 2 months) is going through this although not on such a grand scale like yours. My pedi suggested 2 teaspoons of rice per bottle of milk (formula). This didn't work and he refused to drink the bottle, screamed and writhed in pain, and spit up a ton. Then she recommended going with a Hypoallergenic formula - I asked her if he was allergic to milk she said probably not but it might be a food allergy. The hypoallergenic milk is from Enfamil but it has a weird name and apparently it is VERY expensive. In any case I haven't tried this yet.
She also prescribed Prevacid and I just gave him his first pill ths morning. He seemed to be getting gassy and I could hear his stomach turning and he burped a ton but no screaming or spit up.
So as you've tried everything but the hypoallergenic formula. Maybe it's time to ask your pedi about it?
My LO spits up a lot too, so I feel ya on all the extra outfit changes (on bad days it's 3 outfits for me and 7 for him, plus 5+ burp rags and bibs!). He's BF, and I found that when I stopped eating dairy, soy and lentils, he spits up much much less!
Your LO could have a soy allergy or sensitivity. I read that 30% of babies with a dairy sensitivity also have one to soy. I would say it is probably worth trying a dairy-soy free formula if you can manage it.
My LO has never had an ear infection, so I find that to be strange. My older brother had a dairy allergy and lots of ear infections--my mom figured out the dairy allergy just before needing to have tubes put in and he stopped having the ear infections.
Hope some of that helps! Good luck with your LO!
