Road Trip Suggestions?

The whole fam damily (my parents, siblings, and us) is heading up to Acadia National Park in July for a week.  It's going to be a wonderful vacation, and I'm looking forward to everything BUT the car trip.  It's a 6 hour drive, and DS *hates* the car.  Our usual limit before screaming gets totally out of control is 30 minutes (even with someone next to him), unless he has a bottle in his mouth.  We can't feed him for 6 hours straight.

Does anyone have suggestions?  We're planning to make stops as often as needed, and someone will always be sitting by LO, but I am dreading this...if we stop every half hour, we may never get to Maine!

Re: Road Trip Suggestions?

  • We have a playlist for DS on the iPod with some fun and relaxing songs. We also downloaded white noise (one is rain and the other is ocean waves) and we turn that on if he gets cranky in the car. Does he have a mirror to look at himself? That helps keep A entertained. Otherwise we just make a few extra stops and get him out of the car for a bit. GL and have a great trip!

  • We have to move from Northern IL to San Diego in 2 weeks and DS also hates the car so it will be a very fun 34 hour drive, oh and we only get 5 days to drive it in. I suggest driving at night that's the only tip I know.

  • We have done 2 longish road trips with DS. One was 14 hours and another 7 hours. We decided to try and drive the trip getting there at night then take our time during the day on the way home. On the night trips, we would leave as close as possible to DS's bedtime and it made the first leg of the trip very easy.

  • We just drove to Canada, Niiagra Falls last weekend, it was 9-10 hours.  DS slept the entire way there.  We left at bedtime.  On the way back we drove during the day.  We left after lunch and a little playtime. DS slept his morning nap in the car then we stopped for lunch and BF and playtime.  We had friends with us so their kids entertained him.

Just be expected to stop.  It's no biggie.

  • I moved cross country with DD when she was 2 months old, and went across the state (400 miles) when she was 6 months.  We drove during her naps and stopped and rested & ate when she was awake.  I would recommened familiarizing yourself with the route and having an interesting place or two in mind to stop for however long it takes LO to reset for his next nap.  It will take you longer than 6 hours to get there, but the trip will be way more enjoyable.

    GL!
