Hello-
I was just surprised by the great news that I am 4 weeks pregnant from a few hpt's. I would love recommendations for a great OBGYN that takes united healthcare insurance (i can just look up the suggestions on their website), since i currently do not have an OBGYN in san diego.
I live closest to the UCSD hospital in Hillcrest but have heard that the hospital in La Jolla is much nicer and newer - and that is only 15 minutes from me anyway.
Also I have heard they usually will not see you for an appointment until 8 weeks so i guess i have some time.
I think i would prefer a female doctor who is probably on the younger side, or just more open minded since i tend to be kind if a hippie when it comes it medication/natural home remedies/doctors.
Suggestions?!!
Re: need suggestions for obgyn
I have United and have been going to the Best Start Birth Center on 4th Avenue. For my first two pregnancies (one a m/c and the other my DS) I had Kaiser and saw a midwife so this time I wanted to try a birthing center vs. a hospital setting.
You meet all of the midwives throughout the duration of your pregnancy in case your midwife is not available for any reason at the time of your labor/birth.
Sorry... I'm sure others will have names of OB's if that's what you want

Hi!
I think it depends on what you want for your birth experience. I'm with United Healtcare (PPO) and you can pretty much go anywhere.
I chose UCSD because they have a birth center within the hospital run by midwives, so I am seeing a midwife for all my prenatal care...which I love! I'm seeing Rita Wagner and she is great! But, you will end up delivering with whoever is "on service" at the time. Also, to my knowledge they do not deliver at their Thornton Hospital (the one in La Jolla), but you can do all your prenatal care there. Also, I got in to see them around 8/9 weeks. Didn't feel a need to go any earlier. Some offices will have you wait until 12 weeks which seemed too long for me!
I wanted to do Best Start Birth Center but my hubby felt more comfortable in the hospital setting, so to me UCSD had the best of both worlds.
If you are just planning a traditional, hospital birth, I have heard great things about these OB/GYNs (happen to all be out of Sharp Mary Birch):
Dr. Rovena Reagan
Dr. Robert Biter (proponent of natural birth and very popular/much loved OB/GYN, used to be out of Scripps Encinitas)
The folks at West Coast OB/GYN
Hope that helps!!
I have the same insurance, UHC PPO, 34 weeks pregnant and have been seeing Dr. Chrysten Cunningham in Hillcrest (550 Washington Street). She's an amazing dr. and a wonderful human being. I would even venture saying she is a little bit on the hippie side as well, she's young (mid 30's), and everytime I see her I feel like I'm seeing a girlfriend with whom I feel comfortable talking about pretty much anything, health, pregnancy or life. I highly recommend her.
