Seafood question

The boys have had some white fish already, no problems there.  DH asked over the weekend about salmon.  I have no idea when that's okay.  What have you been told?  And what about shrimp and other shellfish?  I forgot what the recommendation is for those.

Re: Seafood question

  • Our pedi told us that R can have pretty much anything since there are no shellfish allergies in our family.  She has had several types of white fish and salmon (which she likes) and shrimp (which she loves).  She has not had oysters or crab yet.

  • i think if you try other fish, and there is no reaction, then it's all ok.  i don't think it's like PB or honey, where there is a set age to start introducing these foods.  but with bigger fishes like salmon, i'd limit to once/week or so to minimize the mercury exposure.  we give our DS shrimp fish probably twice/week.  it is really the only meats he will eat, other than turkey.

  • We've been giving DS salmon since he was around 10 months old. He loves it and it is a GREAT source of protein and Omega 3s. Contrary to what the pp wrote, salmon is not high in mercury fish. In fact it has less mercury than cod and many other whitefish.

I'd just make sure to give him wild, rather than farmed, salmon. Farmed salmon are fed a type of dyed food to make their meat the traditional pink color. Also farmed salmon is higher in PCBs due to the antibiotics and pesticides they use in the fish pens.

this for sure.  the girls love salmon... and cod...haven't tried shellfish yet, but only b/c I haven't made it in a while...

    Thanks.  I'll remember that.

The boys have had perch and walleye, caught fresh out of Lake Erie.  SOOOO good.  DH and I love salmon and shrimp and were anxious to see if the boys enjoyed it too.  Looks like I know what we'll have sometime this week!
