Babies: 0 - 3 Months

looking for some soothing help

hi all, first time poster...

my son is 3 weeks old today, but he seems to have a discomfort issue. the only way he'll fall asleep is if he's nursing. we've tried everything else that we can think of. swing, sling, white noise, swaddling, sleeping in the car seat, all 5 S's, etc. nothing seems to help him except nursing. even when he falls asleep nursing, he wakes the second we try and move him. even from my wife's arms to mine.

also, due to the fact that we can't get him settled, he gets into a state of overtiredness. yesterday he was awake from 6am to 1pm. he would as always fall asleep while feeding, but my wife would try and put him in the swing so she could have some time to herself, but that just started the cycle again.

has anyone had any experience with this? everyone says this is just a stage, but i wonder if there's some underlying issue. we saw the pediatrician last week and they put him on axid for reflux, but that takes a full 2 weeks to take effect.

 thanks in advance.

  • Welcome to having a newborn. :)

It will get better with time, but I know it's hard to think that when you're a sleepless zombie... :)

I personally do the "eat, awake, sleep" method, that way supposedly they learn to put themselves to sleep instead of being fed to sleep. I'm sure that doesn't work for everyone, but we have had good success with it so far with both kids, so I'm a believer at least. Although with that said, since they sleep so much at only 3 weeks it can be tricky, but I just try to do it when I can! :)

  • My son was like that. Talked to the Dr. Baby sleeps in his carseat, I bought a Moby Wrap which puts him right to sleep, At 2 months the reflux is getting a lot better and he will go to sleep with rocking, walking, car rides, and just cuddling. He is also sleeping better during the night.

At this age, just do whatever works!  It's basically about survival for the first 2.5 - 3 months.  Have you tried pacifiers?  We had to swaddle, jiggle, and use the pacifier to help DD fall alseep for a while.  Plus, we use a white noise machine to help her stay alseep.  Before that, we'd take turns walking around with her for hours.  Keep trying different things and remember that this, too, shall pass!

  • My LO has AR and hates to be laid flat. He will spit up too if we lay him flat. We just recently bought the Fisher Price Rock N Play and it's been a lifesaver so far. He sleeps contently in it and no longer has to sleep on our chests. You my want to give it a try. As far as soothing, I just bought the Fisher Price seahorse and it seems to be working with calming him down. It even soothes me when I'm laying by him. Haha! GL to you and I'm sure others have more advice.
  • Same problem here. Initially we did not want to use pacifiers at all...and then we had a baby!  She loves sleeping with her pacifier and in a swing!
  • Just like someone replied above "Welcome to being parents!!!!" My husband and I went crazy for about the first 4 weeks. My mom even had to come and stay some nights.  My son also has reflux but I've been lucky enough that he doesn't need medication and it is starting to get better.  My son would also fall asleep while breastfeeding and as soon as we moved him he would wake up crying his head off and had to be put back on the breast to fall asleep again. I felt like a human pacifier.  What we found was if he fell asleep at the breast we'd let him suckle for about 15 minutes and then I'd carefully take him off the breast and quickly put in a pacifier. (we like the Avent 0-3 months Orthodontic pacifiers best) Then I'd still hold him against me for another 15 minutes and then I was able to either pass him to someone else to hold or put him in his bassinet.  If I put him in his bassinet he'd wake up after half an hour, but at least it gave my husband and I a half hour to ourselves without having to hold our son!!!  It does get better!!!! Just try whatever you can and something will  eventually work!!!! Good luck!

  • Are you guys against using a pacifier? I could have sworn that I would never use one until I had my son who constantly wanted to be attached to me for comfort. I started to realize the different between an eating suck and a comfort suck. As soon as he switched from eating to comfort I would break the latch and offer the pacifier. I waited until breastfeeding was going well so there wouldn't be any nipple confusion. It took him a little bit to get used to the pacifier and sometimes still doesn't take it very well, but has helped a TON with naps and just giving myself a break during the day. Hope this helps.
  • thanks for all the tips.

we know it will get better, but as you all know, its hard to keep that in your mind at this point.

we've definitely tried the pacifier, but he's so active with his arms when he sleeps, he ends up knocking it out of his mouth. and since he despises being swaddled, nothing we can do about that one. seriously, its a comedy of errors....

we'll keep trying everything we can. thanks.
