Going to the salon with baby?

Good idea or nay? I kinda want a haircut and was wondering if (1) it's really difficult to have the baby next to/near you since the stylist moves around you a lot and (2) the chemicals used in a salon may not be too good for the baby? Or do moms only go to the salon when someone else can watch the baby?

Re: Going to the salon with baby?

  • I never did - I really, really wanted to get a pedicure on more than one occasion and I always go to a spa place that doesn't also do acrylics so it isn't very smelly in there but I didn't want him to fuss and make us have to leave.  And I guess I didn't want him to be exposed to any possible chemicals.

My hair stylist is a friend that had a baby 1 week before me.  She now cuts hair from a special room in her house so I did that and we knew going into it that we would have to take breaks but our babies both slept.  I just set him in a bouncy chair but a stroller would work too as long as he slept and the place wasn't doing perms or highlights.  I think this would work best at a salon with only 1-2 people just in case your baby started to fuss.  I have had my friend cut my hair for 3 years now and she always works at small salons where she if often the only person there so if it was like that I wouldn't hesitate to take a baby. In an environment like that I could park the stroller near but far enough to be out of the way without worry unlike in a busy, crowded salon.

all that said, it seems easier just to leave the baby at home and enjoy some alone time  :)

  • I haven't done this yet, but I wouldn't unless I had no other choice. To be honest, it's not even because of the chemicals (well, not ONLY because of that), but because to me a salon = relaxing me time and I wouldn't want to have to worry about my babies. Stick out tongue
  • I probably wouldn't bring the baby, unless I really had to.  It's funny, though, I just got a haircut on Saturday, and when I left, the stylist said, "Next time bring photos...or even better, bring the baby!  We love babies here!"  So, I was just wondering this myself!  I don't think I can recall ever seeing a baby at the salon.

  • For me, it's a definite nay.  I really enjoy getting my hair done and wouldn't want my baby to distract me.  Plus, I think he'd stress out and/or distract my stylist, since there's a good chance he'd need some tending to during the service.  And, like you said, I'd want to minimize his exposure to chemicals.

  • I never have and don't think I would... It really smells in the nail salon! But my friend says she takes her baby with her to get a mani/pedi all the time. Her baby is 7 weeks younger than Alexa. I have another very ambitions friend who took her walking, full of energy baby with her to get her eyebrows done.......

  • I probably wouldn't take the baby either. I myself can't take the smell of the chemicals so I don't want to subject theb aby to that. Also, what would you do if the baby starts crying while you're having the haircut? I don't want to create a scene in the salon. Like what other pp said, just leave the baby at home and enjoy your alone time :-).
  • i honestly never even thought about bringing the baby w/me, i thought people would look at me like i was crazy LOL or i would worry that she'd cry or fuss (though from the previous comment of a stylist asking pp to bring the baby along i guess it's not uncommon?)...the salon i go to doesn't smell very chemically so it would be more out of fear that she'd be unhappy than exposing to her anything...though i obviously don't want to expose her to chemical anyway
