Babies: 6 - 9 Months

What do u use more often - Nickname or real name ?

I have to start off by saying my SIL is a great parent. This is just something weird I dont understand.

My niece has a very pretty first name but they NEVER , never never, call her it. They always call her by her nickname which is Kiwi. Its super cute, but I wonder when she goes to school if everyone is going to have to to call her that b/c she wont have heard her first name very often.

WDYT? I mean really theres no harm in calling her by her nickname...I just was wondering if its more common than I think? We call DS Bunny but we try to use his real name more often than not.

Do you always use a nickname or do u try to use your LO's real name most of the time ?

  • 50% of the time I call my baby his name. The other 50% I call him a handful of nicknames, but he doesn't have just one. Some of them are true love, baby man, and lovabug.

  • We call Evelyn "E v v y" (spaced out cuz everyone seems to think I'm typing "Ewy" instead of "Evvy"...) or "Monkey" all the time... I try to call her Evelyn a lot, too, though, so she KNOWS her name... I use it especially when I'm trying to get her attention, or if she's looking in the mirror, I'll go "Who's that? Is that Evelyn?"
  • We only use his NN. I actually have the opposite problem - FIL and SMIL only call him by his real name. DS answers to Mickey, there's another Michael/Mike in the family, so please, use Mickey. I guess it's because I honestly don't like the name, but it was important to DH to name DS that.

  • I'd say it's probably about 50/50 here, too.  We've been calling her Sweet Pea since she was born, although I don't really want that to become a permanent nickname.
  • We almost always call her by a nickname, of which we have several.
  • I try to use her name so she learns her name.

  • We have NEVER used DD's real name! We always call her Lilly or Baby girl. She will probably always be called Lilly until she's an adult, and then she can use the more formal version of her name Lillian. However, I kinda hope she wants to go by Paisley when she gets bigger Wink

See , but that makes sense to me. Lillian / Lilly. My nieces name has nothing to do with KIWI LOL I just worry shes going to go to pre-school and they're going to have to call her Kiwi !

  • Just yesterday we noticed that we hardly ever call him Mason. He responds to his name just fine, and he also responds to a particular nickname.
  • My coworker called his daughter "chicken baby" or "chicken" because she was slippery as a chicken when they bathed her.  He even referred to her as "chicken" or "the chicken" when talking about her to us.  By the time she went to school they started using her real name.  She knew her name was "Emma".

Thats what we call kai!  We call him Kiwi!  We do make a point of calling him Kai at least some.... but Kiwi is so cute on him that it kind of stuck!

  • I call DS by nicknames the majority of the time -- munchkin, pumpkin, little man, stinker winkers, etc. But I've started using his name more frequently in the last few weeks or so.

  • We call him Gabriel, or baby boy. We don't ever call him Gabe. DH doesn't like it, but as he gets older he'll probably use it at school. Family calls him Gabriel though.

  • We call DS "Sam" or "Sammy" most of the time. I really wasn't a huge fan of Samuel, but gave in to what DH wanted. I have many other nicknames too, and he responds to all of them.
  • I call DD Kaelyn all the time but I also use Peanut (my nick name for her) and my parent call her KaeKae. DH HATES KaeKae, but I figure when she has younger siblings in the future they'll probably start out calling her that so I see no harm. I too try to use her name a lot, and she recognizes it well. But she also responds to peanut now. I think by that time your Niece enters school she'll know the difference between her nickname and her actual name. I am rarely called my first name, and always go by my nick name, but I all respond if called by my whole name.

  • For us it is about 50/50, but he has a million and one nicknames. He turns his head when we say his name, so I believe that he knows what his real name is.

I agree that it is kind of weird that your SIL NEVER calls her LO by their name, but maybe she doesn't really like the name, but named him/her out of obligation. I am not sure, since I don't know the entire situation.
