TMI-Gross- mucous plug question

I am in North Carolina on vacation so I am asking you ladies since I can't go to my Dr. I am 17 weeks along and both last night and today I had an instance where I wiped and had what I can only describe as a giant booger on the TP. It was clear with maybe a hint of yellow to it, but no pink/red/brown or anything of the sort. I of course google and it tells me that it could be my mucous plug. Isn't that a bit early?!? I then did the Google Image and Gross is all I can say, but it could have been some of the pictures. Both times it was the size of maybe a dime. Is this something that I should be concerned with? I get back to town on Thursday and can call my Dr then if I continue to see it. I have been having some pretty constant pains on my lower left side but I believe that is just RLP. This was definately not just normal discharge, it was thicker. Just looking for your input!

On a more exciting note, we found out on Saturday that we are having a GIRL!!! I am very excited to start shopping and picking things out!

Thanks ladies :)

Re: TMI-Gross- mucous plug question

  • It wasn't your mucous plug... you lose your moucous plug when you are close to giving birth.

Welcome to the snail trail in all its disgusting glory! Pregnancy brings discharge like you have never seen before. So.... yea. One of the unpleasant pregnancy symptoms!

  • No worries! It's not unusual to have some heavy discharge at your point. I know I did with both. Plus, if your mucus plug starts to come out a little early it will often regenerate. As long as there is no blood and no other symptoms (cramping, contractions, etc) you should be just fine. Enjoy your vacay!

  • Exactly what the others said, snail trail in all it's glory.  Ick!

    Yay for team pink!

  • I've had a similar thing happen a couple of times, and I think it's just a change in discharge from pregnancy. From what I can tell you only need to be concerned if it's got pink/red/brown in it. If it was a lot larger than the dime size you described, I would say call the doctor, but I don't think you should worry.

    Yay team pink!

  • so many many many ladies told me to wear panty liners during PG and I found out why...some crazy pregnancy discharge. Totally forgot about it until your post.

  • Don't think it is your mucous plug and even if it is it self-generates throughout your pregnancy, renews/refreshes?  So I wouldn't worry about it unless it is accompanied by contractions or bloody show?

  • Thanks for the reassurance! It was starting to worry me since I am away from home. I have heard about the snail trail, but I wasn't expecting my snail to be so large I guess!  ha, oh well...the price we pay right girls?

    Thanks again.

  • I am of course negative nancy when it comes to this stuff but I would call your doctor just to let them know and see what they say.

I lost my mucous plug at 25 weeks and up to that point i was leaking i guess what is being called as snail trail and also amniotic fluid.  However when I did pass my mucous plug it was quite a bit larger then what you described.  I would estimate it at about the size of a fist, maybe a bit smaller.

Anyway it doesn't sound like what I had but I just wanted to make you aware that it can happen and just to be sure to call your doc even though i'm sure it is snail trail. lol.  never heard that term before now.

Me too. Funny how quickly some of the more unpleasant aspects of pregnancy slip your mind.

  • Ditto pps, it's most likely snail trail. I remember wearing panty liners during pregnancy.

But I would still ask your OB about it.
