Call me judgey but this is a bit much ...

A girl I am friends with on FB posted pics of her 4 day old baby with PAINTED TOE NAILS.  I just don't agree with that .. JMHO though.

Re: Call me judgey but this is a bit much ...

  • I agree...Newborns nails are so thin & there are lots of chemicals in nail polish.

  • I would judge too because I just think it is dumb, purposeless, perhaps toxic, and trashy.  BUT, I suppose I should try not to judge because I don't know the entire situation.
  • I just can't imagine having the energy or interest at 4 days post partum to even originate that idea.  I was still wearing bedroom slippers in the middle of February in MN because none of my shoes fit, crying every other minute, wishing I could go back to work and not have to worry about this tiny little creature that would.not.latch.  A baby pedicure would likely have been the furthest thing from my mind.

  • WTF? In addition to it probably not being too healthy for them, how on Earth would you even have the time to do that (and why would you want to?)
  • I thought regular nail polish was bad for babies (has toxins in it and whatnot).

I still wouldn't put the special non-toxic polish on a baby, because eventually that baby will be putting her fingers and toes in her mouth!!

    I think it's totally ridiculous.

  • I agree with all of the above. You're not judgy, that should just be common knowledge that is a stupid thing to do and unsafe.

What if chipped nail polish got into the babies mouth?

  • Eh.  New mom was probably just bored and wanted to play with the baby.  She likely hasn't even considered the health risks, maybe you could gently suggest it might not be a good idea.

  • Not something I would do, but I don't think too much of it because I've often heard one way moms of identical multiples tell their LOs apart in the very beginning is by painting the toenail of one baby (or I guess you'd need to do different babies in different colors if you had more than twins).

Maybe she was bored and wanted to paint her own nails.  Then thought, Hey!  I have a little girl now, I'll do hers, too!

I had ridiculously easy newborns that slept all the time.  I was so bored I spent hours on the phone, on the computer, watching tv, reading....

  • Well, at least it would have been easy to paint them on a sleeping newborn?

My girls have "mama toes". I paint them while they sit in their high chairs eating a snack.  And they show them to everyone who passes by.

  • How do you paint toenails that small, is my question - my DD has toenails like mine, they're itty bitty! Would you use a q-tip?!

Ha!  Don't envy me too much.  Once DD hit 4 months old, she made up for lost time by not sleeping at all for months.  I've had my own sleep hell  :)

This is what I was thinking.  In addition it seems silly - baby toes are plenty cute w/out polish!  But, whatev.

  • Stupid and makes me think trailer trash. Not to mention I wouldn't want chemicals like that anywhere near them.  Can't let them be a baby for a half a second, could they?

I'm not a fan of polish on anybody under 3-4.

  • I wouldn't do it, but maybe that was her version of the giant hairbow? Maybe she just did it for the pics so people knew she was a girl. Maybe she painted them on the computer with a program and not with real nail polish?

I paint DDs nails and toes now. She loves it. She shows everyone her pretty paint!

Exactly what I was going to say.

  • Okay, I read that first as "year" and thought...your crazy no big deal but then I ran my eyes over it again and it said "day"  THAT"S INSANE!  I wouldn't do it.  And I dont care I would judge who did, somewhat at least.  Like pps have mentioned all the chemicals and what not that are in it?  And seriously....what's the point?  DD is 14 months old and grandmother painted her nails the other day (without my permission) and I still flipped!!  I wasn't ready for her to have painted nails yet (not to mention I would've liked to be the first to paint them) Anyways it WAS cute but still not gonna be something I do regularly just yet.  There's still no point if you ask me.  ALTHOUGH 14 months is much more acceptable in my eyes than 4 days!
  • I think this is a dumb thing to get worked up about. I wouldn't do it to my kid, but newborns don't suck on their toes that I remember, they make kid/baby safe nail polish, and its a helluva lot better than punching holes in the baby's ears 4 days pp.

  • I had enough trouble clipping my girls' nails when they were newborns! It never even crossed my mind to paint them.

  • I agree. One of my friends brought her baby over a couple months ago and her LO's toes were painted and I thought it was too much. To each their own though!!

I agree about the polish, but when I was 4 days PP my kid was being used as a pincushion having just gotten a spinal tap and being apparently freakishly strong and pulling all his IVs out.  Oh, and I'd been sleeping in a chair next to his bed while wondering if he was going to have serious brain damage and trying to pump every 2 hours because they'd given him a bottle of pedialyte and he wouldn't latch.

So you never know where people are coming from and what was going on with them PP.  I <3 you but that stung a little.  I guess I'm oversensitive because I never got to enjoy my first few weeks with my baby.

but that is not the norm. several people in this thread mentioned how busy they were and id venture to guess they weren't busy doing what you were doing.

LOL I get it.  Like I said I know I'm oversensitive.  Had we been at home I would have been vegging out hardcore.

Same here!  My DD insists on showing everyone her fingernails and toenails.  It is actually the only way she lets me clip them is if I paint them afterwards.  But 4 days PP.  That is crazypants!
