How did you choose your OB/midwife/hospital?

Hi ladies.

I'm wondering how you chose your OB/midwife. Did you have specific criteria you were looking for, a specific hospital to deliver at, stick with your OB/GYN that you were already seeing, etc?

I live in Shakopee and work in Golden Valley. I have been seeing an OB/GYN at ParkNic-SLP for a long time and really like her but I don't know about delivering at Methodist (far from home). I'm thinking that I should maybe look into the midwives at ParkNic-Shak as my sister speaks really highly of them (she just had her 3rd) and they are super close to where we live and then I would deliver at St. Francis. However, I am hesitant because I really like my current MD.

Thoughts/advice? Should I meet with the midwives, tour the facilities, etc?

TIA!

Re: How did you choose your OB/midwife/hospital?

  • I see an OB at ParkNic-SLP and am delivering at Methodist, however, I know the drs. there do deliver at other hospitals.  Call the appt. line and ask where your current dr delivers and if he/she is willing/able to deliver at whatever hospital that is closer to your home.

I also know that, at least with Methodist and PNC-SLP, when you go to deliver you receive care from the dr on call.  The dr you saw throughout pregnancy may or may not be the one who delivers your child.  Hope that info helps.

  • I am bias, but had all my care through park nicollet in shakopee and delivered and St. Francis, I could not of been happier with the care.

I LOVE my doctor and the hospital was wonderful.

I would personally go with that as it is a lot closer to home.

  • Congrats on your pregnancy!  I use to live in Shakopee and saw Dr. Druckman at Park Nicollet.  (I'm not sure if he is still there since it's been a couple years.)  I enjoyed him so much as a doctor!!  I know some people prefer a woman, but I always felt extremely comfortable with him.  I wish I didn't move an hour away because I would still be going to him.

My g/f starting going to him when she was 6 months pg.  He was the only doctor that would listen to her concerns and help her!  Logan ended up having some breathing issues after he was born.  Since there was room in the hospital, they left Mom stay too and the doctor helped classify it so insurance would cover it.

My SIL is a surgical tech at St. Francis and has always said good things about the hospital and the OB's during c/s, etc.

  • I would meet with the midwives. I loved having a midwife during my labor and delivery. She was in my room the entire time I was in labor and I loved the personalized one-on-one care that you get from a midwife. If you go with the OB you currently have chances are you're going to end up with the OB on call when you go into labor. Congrats!

Druckman was my doctor as well! I was dead set against having a male doctor, but now will probably make the drive up there to use him again (we now live 40 minutes away)

  • Thanks for the responses, ladies.

I am fully aware that I would deliver with whatever MD is on-call at the time. That is why my sister thinks I should meet the midwives in Shakopee because she had appts with all 3 during her pregnancy and was then comfortable delivering with any of them.

Right now I have my 1st appt next week with a NP at SLP and then with my MD at SLP in late July. I'm thinking I'll keep those appts, ask some questions and probably meet with the midwives in Shakopee as well.

    Thanks again!

  • I've been with my Gyno/OB for seven plus years and LOVE her at Allina in Eagan.  The only hospital that I would ever deliver at is United for the simple fact that Childrens is attached and I've had several friends deliver there and they've all loved it - high risk/NICU and completely healthy.
