Short term disability is a crock of sh*t! (Vent)

According to my benefits package I am supposed to receive a check for $777 for STD. the letter they just sent me states that I'm only entitled to $222 because the original amount may be subject to taxes and deductions. WTF!!!!!!! I have been paying $30 a month for 5 years for the priviledge of this benefit. This totals around $1500. I could have just saved this in the bank and said to hell with STD if I had known they were gonna pull this stunt. STD only works out if you use it right away after you get hired. I am soooo pissed right now!

  • Mine's through UNUM, and on the claim form, it asks whether I want them to withhold for taxes. We checked w/our accountant, and he said not to have them withhold. Did your application/claim form have a box for that, or say that it would default to taxing it?
  • Mine says that they cover you for 6 weeks at 70% only to find out it is really only 4 weeks that they will pay after waiting the 14 day period.  So you are led to believe that they will retro the 14 day wait period but nope not at all.  Then I had a c-section so it should be 8 weeks but even with telling them that, I have to still get a doctors note saying I can't work those other two weeks.

  • I'm sorry, that sucks :( mines through the state and besides the wait period it pretty much rocks.

  • From what I know STD payments are subject to income taxes if you pay the premiums with pre-tax dollars.  I paid mine with post tax dollars, so no taxes were with held.

THIS!  We were shocked to learn this, and this is exactly the reason I had to go back early, we were prepared to have me off with no pay for the extra tiem I wanted to take wiht DS, but once I learned of this I had to return early :(

  • I have Aflac.  I filed my claim and am waiting.  I hope I don't have any issues.
  • After they took out taxes and deductions, my check was about $78. Don't spend it all in one place, right? *rolls eyes* Thank God my parents were able to help us out with the bills.
