1st Trimester

Dental Work at 11 weeks!!!!!

I have been suffering a toothache the past 2 weeks or so, last night the pain became so intense I couldn't sleep.  I went in and saw my dentist this morning and I have an infection.  I am scheduled for treatment in the morning, from what the dentist and my OB said, the treatment is far less risky to the babies than not treating the infection right away.  Has anyone else had to have more than routine dental work in the first trimester???

Re: Dental Work at 11 weeks!!!!!

  • If OB and Dentist agree to treat the infections now don't worry about it. You will be fine. I think it is just a precaution.

  • I had a root canal at 6 weeks.  It is MUCH better to have the work done to get rid of the infection than let the infection fester.  My dentist assured me they do only necessary work in the first tri, but they do it quite often and are confident that it's not a problem.  You'll be grateful once you have it done and the pain is gone!

  • I am sorry but come on people going to the dentist is a good thing during your pregnancy...You want to be healthy for your baby...I just don't get it. Any infection in your head is BAD!!! Gosh if it is left for a LONG time it can kill you....

I can preach about the increased chances of pregnancy gingivitis and premature babies due to periodontal disease BUT Just go to your dentist and Hygienist and keep your mouth healthy.

They will use no Epi with the injections....BTW with your case are they doing a root canal? If so believe me you'll be saying to yourself why didn't I go earlier...GL

  • All I can figure is that they will do a root canal, I can't imagine what else they would be doing.  I've had problems with this tooth before, the crown on it isn't the best and I honestly just thought it was shifting a little causing my bite to be off but when the pain started radiating through my jaw last night, I knew that wasn't it and got myself to the dentist.  So, I'll see the endondist in the morning and hopefully feel much more like myself in the next couple of days.

When you had the crown put on did you always hit it? If so they should of adjusted it so it wasn't in your bite. Over time, If you are constantly hitt ing on this crown it will irritate the ligament around the tooth. If this happens the tooth tends to raise because the ligament is inflammed. So yes they will do a root canal and MAKE SURE they adjust the bite!!!!!!!!!!! DO NOT LEAVE THAT OFFICE TILL THEY ADJST YOUR BITE...or it will still bother you. BTW you can take an antiobitic...did they give you a Amoxicillen? Just call your OB just to clear it with them 1st...Good luck!

I had the bite adjusted right after I had the crown put on 5 years ago then this past November the crown popped off.  I had it put back on and went back in to have it adjusted again and have been pain free until recently.  When I had the crown put on it was at one of the chain dental places.  Now that I see the xray, the crown hangs over a little bit so it makes sense that bacteria and saliva got underneath the crown.  Insurance will not pay to have the crown replaced until after October so once I have these babies, I fully intend of having a new crown made to replace this one.  I will definitely have them check my bite before I leave the office.  The endondist's office called my OB and she ok'd the treatment including antibiotics.

Thank you for your comments, I really appreciate it.

  • Hmmm, interesting. I had my cleaning last week and they found a very small cavity. I called this morning to inform them that I am pregnant and they rescheduled me for my third trimester. They already did the x-rays at my cleaning so I'm not sure what the risk is. I guess I don't have an active infection so they decided to hold off.
