This maybe a crazy idea, but I was thinking baby could sleep in this pack 'n play at least in the beginning when I will probably keep him in our room for ease of nursing. I saw it had this feature "a cozy, oval quilted bassinet create a premium environment for baby" which makes me think regular sleeping is okay.
I am hoping as soon as baby is sleeping through the night I will put him in his own room in a crib, but in the meantime I didn't want to get the co-sleeper if we were only going to use it for a short while.
Am I way off my rocker by thinking this?
Re: Graco Pack 'n Play?
we have several friends that never used a cosleeper, and instead baby sleeps in the pnp in their room during the night, and in the crib for naps during the day. you're not off your rocker!
eta: there's also the full-size ARCS that can be used a playpen later on - that might be an option? but i don't think it's as portable as the pnp. i think the ladies here all use the smaller/bassinet version of the ARCS though? (any reasons why?)
i haven't decided which of the 3 options above we'll go with. our bedroom will only have 1 wall where we can put the bed against - you would normally put the headboard against that wall, but to use the ARCS, we need to orient our bed the other way - it will look very strange
. and going with the pnp appeals to me since we'll be able to use it for traveling too. so...i don't know.
nope, some moms on this board have done it. we opted for the co-sleeper b/c we knew we planned to have him in our room for an extended period and the arms reach goes up to 22 lbs rather than the 15lbs for pnp bassinets.
The other differences - the ARCS has a cord system so that is will actually attach to the parents' bed (not really necessary, but I like it) and one side on the ARCS lowers so you can look right in at the baby - but it doesn't create an uninterrupted surface between sleeping areas, there is a "lip" on the ARCS. These are not must have features so really it was just the weight limit for us since we knew we planned to use it for a long time and it seems slightly sturdier.
THIS is exactly what we're planning to do :-). The pack & play that we're planning to get is similar to what you have (but different design).
Not crazy...at least for using the PNP as a place to sleep.
Best laid plans...I have the ARCS original size which is like PNP but has the drop down side to make it more "open" when next to the mattress. There still is a 4-5" lip though and it has been a barrier to our being able to use it more often than we do (we can only move Libby into it after she's fallen asleep and pray she doesn't wake when we do it). So yeah, we bed share. And we all get good sleep. Not sure when she will STTN...I mean she does sleep for 5-6 stretches but it's usually AFTER she's awaken to nurse around 2-3 a.m. We might have a bit of reverse cycling going on....
Anyway, the ARCS we have does breakdown into a travel case...not sure if it's more or less like a PNP since I don't have one. It's like a long, rectangle with a handle (10x10x32 and 32 lbs) when it's broken down into the case. I'd be incline to take it for a road trip, but probably not on an airplane (since it would surely count as one checked bag). Ours also can be converted into a playard. It can be used in the co-sleeping position up to 30 lbs. or before baby can pull up on his/her knees. In the playard position it holds up to 50 lbs.
LOTS of parents use a PNP in their room as a sleeping place for baby. Some skip the crib altogether and just use the PNP.
Here's good pic and review of the ARCs:

Here's a good pic of the "lip":
I think with Baby #2 I'll more success using it from the get-go since we now know to swaddle the baby. When we brought Libby home she HATED to be swaddled and that was only way I could get her to sleep in the ARCS. Now I know I should have stuck it out, used the Miracle Blankets from the start, etc. Ah, well...it's all a learning curve with a new baby.
Next time I might go with a Snugglenest in the ARCs since I discovered she's sleep in her Boppy in there but it's not safe for sleeping so I only let her nap that way (so I could monitor her position):
