3rd Trimester

My doc overly-cautious - NSTs, CBCs, and induction-talk over "low" platelets?

So, went in for 38/39 wk appt today - due July 3 - and am 2 cm, 75% and -2.

I have had "low", but stable, platelets (126-133) for the last 2 mos.  Doc started monitoring them with a weekly CBC about 2 weeks ago.  Anyway, he is now sending me every 3 days for NST test at L&D (starting tomorrow afternoon) and wants to discuss induction if I make it to my next appt. in one week.  All on acct of these "low" platelets.  I have had NO other signs or symptoms of pre-E.  From what I can tell on the net - my platelet level could be totally normal for me.  Doc admits this, but says there's no way of knowing.  I think DH and I are leaning towards saying no induction until post-EDD unless another reason presents itself (and Doc's 4th of July plans certainly won't count- he actually joked today, "We don't want a firecracker baby".  Um, isn't my EDD July 3, Doc?)  In the meantime, I am going to walk walk walk and try to rock this baby into motion!

  • I don't know. If I were having some kind of worrisome complication, even as minor as yours sounds, I think I would listen to the doctor.  If he's honestly as remotely nervous about it as he seems, I would do the induction.

  • I agree  with you OP. I've seen and heard of too many docs blowing minor things out of proportion simply to better accomodate their schedules. Induction if your body isn't prepared for it is pretty much a sure bet of a c/s. Google bishops score, and ask him what yours is... if your body isn't favorable to an induction there's no point in attempting one. Also, if you change your mind and start leaning toward letting him induce, talk about what you're willing to let him do. Anything short of him breaking your water and you can actually demand to be disconnected and leave at anytime if it's not working.
  • Listen to your dr.   That's what they're paid for.

  • I'm with you.  I would say no way to an induction unless it was needed and/or I was at least 41 weeks.  Have lots of sex and walk and eat spicy thai food.  Those are the 3 things my midwife told me to do today.

  • You and DH should definitely not feel pressured for an induction before your EDD, or even a few days after! I agree that you are probably fine, and especially with your cervix already getting ready like that. I was only 1cm and 50% effaced the day before I went into labor with DD!

  • I understand your hesitancy to be induced, but honestly cannot understand why on earth you're asking bumpies for medical advice.  If you think your doctor is being overly cautious, get a second opinion from another doctor.  But please don't make your decision based on what you hear on this board.
  • Is there another MD in the practice you could get a consult from?
  • I'm not sure why the dr would want so many nst's done.  I too have low platelets (98 as of thursday).  I'm currently taking steroids to keep them above 100 at the least b/c if my platelets drop too low, some anesthesiologists will not let you have an epi or a spinal for c-section.  you'd have to go under general to have a c-section.

my dr sent me to a hematologist in the medical group to manage the issue.   The baby is fine and low platelets doesn't do anything to the baby I was told.  It's more of a danger to you.  I would ask your dr about going to see a hematologist and see what they recommend.  Also find out the cut of for your hospital as far as epi's and spinals are concerned!  gl

This.  Though it's true that some OBs push for scheduled induction, it sounds like your OB is truly concerned about your blood work.  Remember, their goal is a healthy baby and a healthy momma, not an ideal birth experience.

I'm all for going as natural as possible, but if you need an induction, don't be afraid to get one.
