San Diego Babies

San Diego obstetricians

We want to choose an ob and a hospital before we get pregnant. Any recommendations, in mission valley, downtown, or La Mesa area?

Re: San Diego obstetricians

  • I had a great experience delivering at Sharp Mary Birch.  My doctor was a perinatologist (specialist) but I have seen the OBs at West Coast OBGYN and was happy there.

After 2 rounds of IVF & 2 rounds of FET, we were blessed with identical twin girls!

  • I'm a nurse at Mary Birch. I've toured other hospitals and, if my OB delivered there, I would deliver there in a heartbeat. They really are a fantastic hospital!

  • just to clarify, you would recommend West Coast, Mary Birch, or both??

    Thanks for your feedback

Oops, sorry. I definitely would recommend Mary Birch for a hospital. For a dr, I've heard good things about West Coast OB/Gyn. My favorite dr, though, is Dr. Daneshmand, but he is a perinatologist. Dr. Barmeyer is also supposed to be great.

  • I highly recommend Mary Birch as a hospital to deliver at...it's right next to Children's Hospital if anything were to happen to your little one! I personally have Dr. Phillip Diamond as my OB. I have been with him for nearly 10 years. He's out of Sharp Rees Stealy in Otay Ranch. Dr. Barmeyer delivered my son and he was fantastic - he's out of West Coast I think.

  • I just delivered at Mary Birch 2 weeks ago.  It's no frills but we had a good experience.  Our L&D nurse was AMAZING!!!  We went to West Coast as well.  So you know, it's a practice with 4 Physicians and 2 Nurse Practitioners.  When you go to your Prenatal Visits, every other visit is with one of the Nurse Practitioners; for the other visits you rotate through the Drs so you meet them all before your delivery.  I liked all of them except Dr. Bales.  I got lucky...ended up being induced and had Dr. Saffer who was my favorite.  Good luck!

Just wanted to clarify-Dr. Barmeyer is actually out of Sharp Rees-Stealy at Health Center Drive in San Diego. His office is right next to Mary Birch. If you go to Sharp.com you can research all of the drs that deliver there.

  • I recommend UCSD, especially if you are a low-risk mom and would like to see the midwives. They're great! They are able to work with any low-risk mom either in the birth center or in Labor and Delivery. So if you'd like to have a natural birth they have more options, and if you would like pain medication you have that option, too. They have a cesarean rate of 13% I believe vs. 30-40% with other local hospitals. Mary Birch doesn't have the best intervention rates especially for Cesareans.
  • According to CalHospitalCompare.org Mary Birch has the same c-section rates as Scripps La Jolla and UCSD. Mary Birch specializes is high-risk deliveries. They have a 61 bed Level 3 NICU in house and are connected to Rady Children's Hospital if an emergency were to occur.
