Hi ladies. My husband doesn't seem to believe how much nursey furntiure cost. Maybe I'm not looking at the right places but I find they range from $1,000.00 and up for a crib, dresser, and chest.
How much did your nursery furniture cost? How many pieces did you get for that price?
Re: How much did you spend on your nursery furniture?
$1000 is ALOT to pay for a nursery! WOW, I couldn't see spending that much.... We got our crib and mattress for about $250 total on Amazon. We also are creating a changing table out of an old dresser and got a hand me down rocking chair from my parents.
Look around for sales. You don't need to spend that much... you'll need the $$ for diapers!
Our crib was $159 + $40 for a mattress. Glider with ottoman was $140. The change table/dresser combo was the priciest piece at $399 because it was a gift and the giver insisted we pick something nicer than the $80 change table we'd originally picked (it matched the crib and we didn't plan to have a dresser). It's all sturdy and well-made, we plan to use it for all of our children.
You can definitely do it on a budget. The reality is your baby will use this stuff for like 2 years tops. Why sink the big money into nursery furniture? I'd rather buy the quality stuff later on when they're old enough to appreciate and hang onto it.
Ikea gulliver crib--$100
ikea poang rocker and ottoman with cushions--$250
old dresser refinished with paint and new hardware for change table-- $100
ikea rug--$40
bedding/changing pad/etc made by my mom and mil fabric--$250
Frames for prints from feed your soul free art: $50
Still need to get a lamp and most likely a few other odds and ends
I'm hoping to come in at around $1000 for everything.....
crib $679
mattress $110
dresser combo $399
armoire $399
we spent about $1600 with tax. our dresser and armoire will grow with him, so we are just going to get a full bed later to match so I think it was worth the money.
(Baby's grandparents funded about 75%):
$2300 @ Restoration Hardware:
Lifetime convertible crib, conversion kit, dresser/changer, changing topper, tall bookcase...
+
$700 Dutailier Glider w/ottoman and nursing stool
About $3K I guess. We don't have any decor yet, most of that will come from the shower....
Anyway, I hope the furniture really lasts!
I am pretty shocked at the amount people will pay for things these days - I really hope you won't spend $1000+ on your nursery furniture. You should check out Baby Bargains, which is like my baby buying bible (I just re-read it today in preparation for my LO).
Our furniture purchases:
Ikea Gulliver Crib in white: $99
Ikea Hemnes 8-drawer dresser in white: I want to say it was $279 - but it's gone up in price since April. It is a huge dresser (plenty of room) and we put a changing pad on top.
Rocker: been in DH's family for years
2 sets of tall white shelves: been in the house already (repurposed)
I don't know what else to cover.
GL...
We spent over $2000.
That was for the crib, armoire, and combo (dresser/changing table).
For an additional cost, we got the conversion rails (to make the crib into a full size bed) and mattress.
I don't agree wtih PP who said they'll only use it for a few years. Our crib turns into a toddler bed and then a full size bed. The changing table is a dresser and later in life, the armiore turns into an entertainment center.
The furniture set is very well built and I see it lasting a loooong time. My SIL has had her set for over 9 years now and it's still going strong.

We spent well over $1000 but it's worth it because I didn't have to waste my time bargain shopping and I know everything will last a long time.
Crib - $480
Recliner - $600
Dresser/Changer - $250
Rugs - $700
Sofa (modern futon kind of thing) - $300
Bookcase - $150
I would say 1K+ is pretty accurate if you want good quality brand new furniture. You can always score big on Craigs List if you don't have that much money so spend.
I got a $600 Ragazzi crib for $150. We were really lucky that a family friend gave us a solid wood antique dresser and another friend gave me her changing table.

Madeline 1.2.11
William 8.5.12
We spent around $3000 for everything. We got a crib ($599), dresser ($799), hutch ($399) and nightstand ($299). The furniture is Munire. We got a 15% discount for buying more than 3 pieces.
We also have the flat top bookcase from Land of Nod which was $400 and our fully upholstered Dutailier glider and ottoman was about $1000.
You could definitely do it for a lot cheaper than we did, but we wanted this furniture to last through 3 kids (it's on kid #2 and holding up great) as well as grow up with kid #3. I'm a believer in you get what you pay for so we invested in quality.
Crib: $450 + $50 for a mattress
Dresser: $550
bookcase: $70
We have yet to buy a glider, but the one we want is about $200
Crib $450
Dresser $620
Full Bed conversion rails $180
Mattress $150
--$1400 total
Crib/Changer Combo & Mattress: $150 (Found on Craigslist in pristine condition)
Wardrobe: $100 (Big Lots, Room doesn't have a closet)
2 Small Bookshelves: $1.40 each (CVS, at 90% off)
Glider: $10
13-Piece Bedding Set & Mobile: $97 (eBay, Geenny Girl Artist Set)
Graco Sweetpeace Infant Soothing Swing: $50 (Found on Craigslist in pristine condition, same seller as the crib)
Paint for Glider & Walls: About $60 (1 gallon of pink, 1 quart of burgandy, 1 can of furniture spray for glider)
Total: $469.80
We still have to get the stroller and carseat, but we're waiting until we have our Car Seat Safety class at the hospital. We can buy an extra there for $20 with our insurance plan.
Crib: $900
Changing Table (we bought an antique buffet and had it refinished): $400
We used and existing dresser as it is just in the walk in closet.
My CW-er spent $5k on her nursery.
You can spend very little or you can spend $1k plus. Our budget for furniture is $550 but we may go a little over. It really depends on whether I can score a clean glider from CL or a moving sale and what our friend is willing to give us since they are done having kids.
Here is our breakdown:
Crib- $300 at Albeebaby.com
Dresser/changing table- $180 at IKEA
Tall dresser- $280 at IKEA
Nightstand- $60 at IKEA
Rocking chair- $280 at Walmart
So, $1100 for all the furniture in the nursery.
Where are you people getting $50 mattresses?!?!?!
Our crib is Pali, so it was a splurge at $419 (I'd been looking at a $300 Muniere one but my husband fell in love). I figure if we have another kid, it'll easily last through 2. If we don't, it converts into a child's bed that I'm sure we'll be using for 4 years (maybe we'll end up doing both -- which would make 6 years out of it).
I don't want a mattress that will wimp out on us. I'm leaning toward the Naturepedic no-compromise because it's waterproof and organic (and two-sided for toddlers), and I usually see those for around $259.
We spent our money there because that seemed important to us -- with all the safety issues around kids and how long we'd probably use the furniture.
My parents bought us a glider ($400) otherwise, we probably would have repurposed furniture from elsewhere in the house or gone Craigslist shopping.
We got the dresser for $35 off craigslist (solid wood!), and are refinishing that and a bookshelf we own for about $40 of paint and other supplies (I will probably reuse that to paint some frames I already own for decor). The rug was $50 on clearance. Curtains were $8 a pair (2 sets) and the hardware ran us another $20. Room paint was $40. I figure I'll get sheets and a changing pad and stuff at the shower. We're NOT doing a bedding set -- waste of money. We'll probably be putting in a new lighting fixture -- don't know how much that will cost, what with labor and all. Possibly as much as $300.
So:
furniture: $753 (including mattress, not including free glider)
paint and accessories: $126 (not including new lighting)
I think I probably spent less than one would on a bedroom "set" from one of these baby furniture makers (especially if you're talking Pali), but I don't like that matchy matchy "set" look, and I thought it was appalling that even a "reasonably" priced maker like Muniere would charge $300 for a crib, then $600 for a "dresser" the size of my bedside table! That's insane. Craigslist or IKEA, baby. And that way, I can actually afford to have an electrician come in and install a ceiling fan (I think I might use that same dresser paint and paint the fan paddles to match. I have so much left!)
The crib we want is $700, plus $100 for the mattress. My mom will be getting us that.
We are using a dresser we already had, but bought a $200 changer top/pad for it.
The glider armchair with ottoman was $760 from JCP.
The shelves we bought cost $250.
So about $2000. We could have spent much less, there are great cribs for less than $200, dressers for $300-400, rockers for $200, I can see getting a great nursery put together for less than $1K.
A good thing to try on Craigslist is to post what you are looking for and let people respond to you. I ended up getting the crib DH and I registered for. We kept scouring the boards for a Cherry wood crib and couldn't find the right one. Then, we posted what we were looking for and not even an hour later, we had an email with the crib we were looking for AND the mattress included. Definitely always go and see everything first before you buy it. As soon as we walked in their house, we just knew anything they wanted to sell would be in almost perfect condition.
Local yard sales and estate sales can be great, too. We found our glider at one of our neighbor's estate sales. It was white, so we just bought furniture paint to get it the right color.
Good luck with all of your nursery shopping!
I was able to keep our Nursery under $500, by buying off craigslist for baby furniture. Everything that I purchased was in like new condition & I made sure that nothing was on any recall list before purchasing. I also when looking for furniture wanted to find things that could be use for many years or stored for our next baby.
Crib- Craigslist $100.00 & that included: mattress, rails & parts to convert to a toddler bed, then a Full bed.
Changing Table- Craigslist $25.00 included changing pad
Dresser- Craigslist $50.00
*all furniture matches*
Paint- $25.00
Wall Letters- $70.00
Closet Organizers- $35.00
Toy Box- $20.00
Hanging Pom Poms- $30.00
Fabric to make curtains, changing pad cover & throw pillows $40.00
Glider w/Ottoman- Baby shower gift
Crib/Toddler Bedding- Baby shower gift
Matching Full Bedding- Baby shower gift (the set that I chose for DD crib bedding had another small set for a Full bed)
Hamper, Diaper Genie, crib sheets, & other accessories were also Baby shower gifts.
Good luck shopping!
I for got to add that we also bought a new fan with light for $100.00
DaVinci Emily Crib -- $229 from Amazon
Sealy Baby Ultra Rest Mattress-- $89 from Amazon
Storkcraft - Bowback Glider Rocker & Ottoman-- $125 from Walmart
Ikea Expedit bookshelf- $69
Ikea floating wall shelves-- $40
Refinished used dresser from parents - $0
Our budget was $1000 for the nursery, including furniture, decor, as well as the carseat ($150) and some other baby items (bouncer, tub, etc). Paint, wall art, curtains, simple bedding, storage baskets and all of that adds up, so be prepared to work a few $100 into your budget for that as well.
I didn't skimp on quality or safety of the crib and mattress, both were rated highly. I didn't splurge on the glider. Ikea expedit bookcase will be great for the future as it will fit lots of toys in baskets and such. I think we will get rid of the dresser as LO gets older to make more space in the room, and just use the closet for storing clothes.

formula-feeding, co-napping, sposie-using, baby-wearing, ap-ish mamma!
We bought our stuff from JCPenny which I highly recommend by the way.
Crib $400
Changing table $389
Dresser $400
I'm not going to judge anyone on how much they spend on their nursery. We all come from different financial situations and comfort zones. For me, shopping is a sport and you get bonus points for thrifty strategy.
Crib: Graco Lauren-from Walmart.com $132.97 including shipping
Crib mattress:$100 at BRU, paid $80 with a 20% off coupon
Dresser: Ikea Hemnes 8 drawer dresser $297 as of 2 months ago
Swivel Glider: we got the standard micro suede one sole at BRU for $450, but found a barely used one on CL for $60.
Ottoman for glider: $150 but paid $120 using a 20% off coupon
$145 for a crib (ikea gulliver)
using dresser from guest room, putting changing pad on top - $0
we bought a recliner/rocker from a furniture store but will put out in living room after LO outgrows it (I refused to get a granny looking rocker) - we splurged - it was close to $600
My husband overindulged since we are having a "girl" total cost $1800.00 for 3 pieces, crib, chest, armoire.
