Pregnant after a Loss

anyone have vitiligo or get it while pregnant?

I think I may have it. Under my arm pit I have 2 somewhat larger areas that are smooth white with no pigments and on my upper inner thighs on both sides (not right across from each other). They are new and just got them in the past 2-3 weeks I just noticed them. I will bring it up to OB this Wed at my 20 week appt. It is considered an autoimmune disorder and my father has an autoimmune disorder of rheumatoid arthritis (so that puts me at a 10-15% risk of getting ANY autoimmune disorder). My sister got an autoimmune disorder after having her 2nd baby with her thyroid called graves disease. Just wondering if anyone is with me on this as pregnancy can cause it to start!

Re: anyone have vitiligo or get it while pregnant?

  • I have vitiligo under my arms as well. Sometimes when I get more tan as the summer wears on, I have a small patch under an eye. There is a family history of Hashimoto's, I've been to 2 rheumatologists & been classified with symptoms of autoimmune issues due to the vitiligo, positive ANA, knee pain, and recurrent m/c's. I see my rheumatologist regularly throughout the pregnancy and nothing else has come up. I do not have a dx of an autoimmune disorder, although based on history & current symptoms she will always keep tabs on me. I will have to see her for the rest of my life probably just to monitor to make sure these symptoms don't turn into a disorder. She has also monitored me as often as my ob/gyn during pregnancy. Just to reassure you again...I have not received a dx despite extensive testing. Your best bet would be to see a rheumatologist who can run some basic testing if you are concerned. (Not sure where you are in PA, but my rheumatologist is in NJ, just off of I-95). PM me if you want more info (as I've also seen a rheumatologist who specializes in pg & autoimmune issues in NYC).

I am near Scranton/Wilkes-Barre area so about 1 hour 45 min to NYC. Is there anything special during pregnancy that you are doing? I am not even sure that is what I have but I am pretty sure from researching it and looking at pictures. I am going to ask my OB for a referral to see a dermatologist. Thanks for the info!

Not really doing anything special related to the pg. I take baby aspirin, but that is more related to the MTHFR & +ANA than the vitiligo. It was also my decision to take, I was not told I have to take it by my dr. Other than that, I just have to monitor my symptoms & see my rheumatologist...who asks me if any symptoms have changed. • I have had small patches all over my body with no pigment... its more noticeable when I'm tan because those spots refuse to pick up any sun.  I went to a dermatologist (I go every 6 months for check ups, since I used to tan almost every day for about 7 years....) and they told me that it was not vitiligo, that TRUE vitiligo (the kind that takes over all of your skin) starts on the very appendages (finger tips, nose, ears, toes...) and spreads.  It does not start where mine are (forearms, thighs, ankle).  My grandmother had vitiligo and now has zero pigment anywhere on her body - that was why I wanted to get it looked at (hereditary).

Interesting, I wonder what the heck mine is in my armpits and upper, inner thigh areas. HMM!  I guess I will find out on Wed.
