Vitamin D supplements while breastfeeding?

Py pedi wants me to take 4000 IU of vitamin D while I breastfeed so my DS is not deficient in vitamin D, does anyone else take this high of an amount?

  • 400IU is daily recommended intake for infants/children, adults is 800IU and adults over 50 it's 2000IU (new rec per Osteoporosis Foundation).  We use poly vi sol though admit she doesn't get it every day and give a drop out of a vit D capsule (5,000IU, it's what me and DH take) every few days along with the contents of a fish oil capsule that we give daily.

I am, professionally, in the midst of working up a 13mo old with possible rickets but in the least a vit D deficiency so yes, I would recommend giving D.

5/08- blighted ovum, spont ab; 2/20/09- epi, VAVD, Girl! breastfed 24mo; 10/10- blighted ovum, spon ab; 12/10- no fetal pole, Cytotec; 11/20/11- unmedicated SVD, Girl! breastfed 18mo; 11/7/13- unmedicated SVD, breastfed 18mo; 2/11/16- unmedicated SVD, exclusively pumping to at least a year.

  • Our pedi recommended vit D for DD, not for me. We give her Dvisol. The ped said it wouldn't work for me to take extra vit D b/c not enough is passed through bm. You should be careful if you are taking extra vit D because it is a fat soluble vit, meaning it stays in your body, you don't pee out what your body doesn't need (like with many other vitamins). So it's possible to have a toxic amount in your system.

  • I was told that if DD was outside (not even in direct sunlight) for 15 mins a week that, that should be enough Vit. D. We were never told to give her any Vit. D drops.
  • Our pedi recommended it and we have been giving our son TriViSol once daily since a week after he was born.

It's interesting, my doctor checked me and I was deficient in Vitamin D despite spending lots of time in the sun with sunscreen only on my face.  I try to get my son suntime every day but I am a big believer in Vitamin D as well.

How's your calcium intake? Your body can't absorb the Vit. D if you don't eat/drink enough calcium.

  • My pedi recommends that I take a vitamin and give DS 1mL of vitamin D.  I had prenatal vitamins left over so I am taking them.  I will admit that I do not remember to give DS his vitamin every day.
