Has anyone done this?
I'm flying my son down to FL on Tuesday and leaving him there with my mom for almost a week (she's going to fly him back up).
I remember reading that DH and I should sign a letter giving her permissions to authorize medical care if necessary (she lives in the middle of nowhere and I can envision a bee sting or something - I hope not). What do I say? Just that we give her permission to let a dr treat him? I'll send his insurance card too.
I'm also, just in case, sending a letter giving my permission for her to fly with him on the given date/time from Orlando to Baltimore. They don't have the same last name and I don't want it to be an issue (although I can't imagine it will be).
And - remind me. I can take food, but not drinks through security, right? I flew in October, but it was just me and I'm relatively low-maintainance. Will they give me a hard time about an asthma inhaler for him (as a carryon)?
Re: Question about letter authorizing medical care
Food but not drinks is correct.
There are free legal software programs on-line that can give you a specific form. I think they tend to be a little overkill.
When I left for 4 days I just wrote a letter stating K's name, DOB, SS number along with a short list of people that could make medical decisions for her. I had the letter notarized. I left a copy of my drivers liscense (for proof of signature), K's insurance card, as well as a copy of her birth certificate.
Should there be a true (read: extreme) medical emergency they will treat your son regardless. The letter would only be for something more passive that might need attention.
I hope your son has a great time. What a giant adventure for him. You're a pretty cool mom to let him go.
