It seems as though my friends' babies who sttn use pacis. DS has never
cared for a paci, but I wonder if he would sleep better with one. So,
I'm testing a theory here.[Poll]
My child that sttn at 7 weeks and was an awesome sleeper (DD1) hated the paci. My younger DD loves the paci and then spits that effer out a million times a night and doesn't sttn.
He only gets a paci in bed. He falls asleep with it and spits it out right after that. Since he figured out how to put his paci back in his mouth himself (around 8.5 mths) he has been sleeping 12 hrs at night.
We tried unsuccessfully to take away the pacifier (soothie in our house). She would go to sleep fine, but would wake up in the middle of the night. We reintroduced the soothie, convinced her she liked it again, and got back to sttn. We throw 2-3 in with her so she can find one if she wakes up now.
We took Ds's paci away over a month ago now. He STTN just fine without it. He mainly used it as a chew toy anyways. He would always throw it out of his bed after we put him down.
DD has always used a paci to sleep. We encourage it b/c it reduces SIDS risk. She definitely falls asleep better with it, but I don't know if it has anything to do with whether she STTN or not. I actually think it makes them sleep lighter, which is why it reduces the risk of SIDS. That would imply that it makes them less likely to STTN.
SS. We give DD a paci when we put her down and she spits it out when she goes to sleep. If she wakes up, she'll put it back in and may or may not keep it.
She STTN sometimes (what I call STTN, 8:30-5:30, then wake up to eat and back down until 7:30, but I wake up at 5:30 for good). Usually she's up once or twice.
Neither of my girls ever had a paci. DD1 STTN starting at 10 weeks and never stopped. DD2 is hit or miss with STTN, but when she does wake up she genuinely needs food and goes right back to sleep after nursing.
We weaned DD from the paci when she was 4 months old because it actually interfered with her sleep. She fell asleep with the paci, then it fell out at some time and when she was in a lighter sleep phase, she was looking for it and crying. She started STTN when she didn't need the paci anymore.

DS falls asleep with the paci and when he stirs around 5am, we give it back to him and he goes back to sleep until either we wake him up to go to daycare or usually around 7:30 on the weekends.

This exactly.

we never gave either a baby a paci and they both STTN at 4 months (had a sleep regression at 5 months and resumed STTN at 6 months)
They each went through a thumb sucking stage.
