i was just told thursday this is why our baby is measuring small. i read some nt so great things about it. anyone else care to share there story so i can have some peace of mind. thank u
I don't know if I can give you much peace of mind, but my daughter is also measuring small. She dropped from the 68% percentile to the 7% percentile in 4 weeks, and then 2 weeks later dropped into the 4% percentile.
It is very nerve-wracking, and I am still not sure what the Dr. is going to do. The Dr. ran a bunch of blood work on me to look for infections, and such, and I actually have a clotting disorder that can lead to IUGR. I don't have any more "stories" but I have read a couple women on here have had full-term deliveries of small babies.
DS2 had IUGR along with low fluid. He was born emergency csection at 38 weeks and weighed 3lbs 15oz. He was in the NICU for 5 days but not on O2 or anything. And I got to start BF the next day. He was just in there to watch his temp and his weight. They let me bring him home once he hit his birth weight again.
Now he is a happy healthy 37lb 2 y/o! He had tripled his weight by 2 months. See siggy.
I think some babies just grow better out of the belly. At least mine did.
They think I "might" have asymmetrical IUGR. Her abdomen is measuring small but she is still above 10th percentile. They checked my placenta & cord, both look fine. I have a growth u/s this Friday so I am hoping her abdomen has caught up.
Thanks ladies...we have have a rough pregnancy this whole time ...very sick with bleeding in my 1st tri and then pretty quite 2nd tri and now this....we have been receiving monthly ultrasounds since 20 weeks since we couldnt get all the pictures of the heart they wanted. Then at one point they told me she was the 40th% and that that was really good. At the next ultrasound (4 weeks later) they said she had dropped to the 20th% and that I needed to continue to come once a month to be checked but I had nothing to worry about unless she dropped under 10%.
Well last week we were at the ultrasound and they said she was now the 7th%. Weighing in at 4 lbs 12 oz. The doc was concerned that its a placenta issue and wants to induce no later then 39 weeks.
We now have to go weekly to get Bpp tests done and if she fails any of them we will have to be induced right away. I know I will be full term next week but that doesnt help me feel better considering she is measuring 2 weeks behind.
I really dont even know how to feel about all this. I mostly feel like a failure, that I did something wrong.
It is nothing you have done wrong-- unless you are smoking, or doing drugs. (I actually had my Dr. come out and ask me and I was like "No- I've never!"
My son had slight growth problems -- when he was born at 35w he weighed 4lbs 11oz. As of 1.5 weeks ago, my daughter was measuring about 3 weeks behind... so I know how you feel. I have been struggling with a lot of the same feelings that you have.
Look at it this way, you've made it into the "safety" net in the pregnancy-- you're at 36 weeks! Just make sure you're taking good care of yourself, drinking lots of fluids, and watching baby's movement-- these things the Dr. has probably already told you.
I'm pretty sure my new motto after this pregnancy is going to be something like "Babies are people too" It would be nice if our babies could tell us why they were doing what they are, but like everyone else they are doing things on their own terms, and filling us in when they can! (ha ha!)
One thing my Dr did say is that as the placenta gets "older" it gets calcified and that can lead to an lesser functioning placenta (she checked mine to see if i was developing this very early-- thank goodness nothing looks wrong there!). I know my Dr. said they can look for evidence of calcification on the u/s.
I am also heading to this diagnosis. I was diagnosed with gestational hypertension a week and a half ago and started my NST's this past Thursday. I also had to have a biophysical U/S to check placenta, fluid levels, and growth. My NST went well and we passed. The U/S was good as far as my placenta looks good and my fluid levels, however our little lady is measuring symmetrically small. Most likely she is just a little baby (most babies born in our family ar 6-7lb babies, DS was only 6lb 13oz), but because of my GH they are concerned there is still risk for IUGR. I have not seen the doctor and won't until after tomorrow's NST, but the U/S tech pretty much informed me that they would most likely change my modified bed rest to strict bed rest. Who knows though, my BP is slowly creeping upwards. I won't be surprised if I end up on meds or in the hospital after tomorrow. UGH! My pregnancy with my son was so easy, so far this little girl has been nothing but drama! Typical I guess! LOL! I am trying to not worry, although I have been reading the risks that go along with IUGR, I figure it isn't going to help anything and only going to make my BP worse! I just keep praying that all is well and that she will be here soon and I will know she is O.K.!
thanks ladies you are all so sweet and supportive. I wish I would have come here sooner! I really appreciate everything you said its so nice to know I am not alone.

I had IUGR with my daughter, and it sounds almost like what you're going through. At 37 1/2 weeks she weighed 4 lbs 12 oz and the peri said that I had to be induced at 39 weeks. They weren't sure exactly why she was measuring small, but they think it's because she wasn't utilizing the nutrients from the placenta and that she would grow better once she was born - and she did. I was induced at 38 weeks 6 days and she was born the next day, weighing 5 lbs 3 oz. Just last week at her 6 month appointment she was a whopping 14 lbs (14th percentile). She is still small but is developing on schedule.
I also felt like a failure and kept wondering if I had done anything wrong to make her so tiny. Just know that as long as you're not doing anything you aren't supposed to while pregnant, that you haven't done anything wrong! I hope my story reassures you, knowing that there are positive outcomes I wish you the best and if you want to know more or just feel like talking just pm me I know how you feel! Keep us updated!

I like to check in here periodically and offer support to other IUGR mamas--my DS was born at 37wks at 3lbs 6.9oz--feel free to read my blog about my IUGR experiences! There ARE positive outcomes! Feel free to PM me w/ any questions (I spent my last 2 months of pregnancy on strict hospital bedrest so I had a lot of time to do research about IUGR and related issues and testing and what not)
if you go back to entries starting in Nov/Dec 2009 you will see the beginning when I first had my u/s that said DS was small and I wrote about my experiences all the way through L&D in March 2010
**ETA--- My DS was severely growth restricted measuring the size of a normal 29-30 weeker at 36 weeks, He was born 100% healthy at 3lbs 6.9oz (smal doesnt always = sick), spent no time in the NICU, scored 8 and 9 on his APGARS and we were home from the hospital 4 days after he was born (they kept us both a little longer just to be positive he was fine, which he was--he stayed in our room w/ us the whole time) Dont be too hard on yourself--sometimes there is no cause behind IUGR kids, they couldnt find anything 'wrong' with me or w/ him and they sent the placenta away for more testing after birth and it was perfectly healthy too--basically there is no reason behind him being small, he just is but has continued growing a decent amount since birth and hasnt had a single health issue and is a SUPER easy baby
I'm not sure if you'll see this but I wanted to share my story really quick. We found out at my 30 week u/s that DS was measuring in the 23rd %tile. A few weeks later I was put on bedrest for high blood pressure and I had to do bi-weekly NSTs. I had another u/s at 34 weeks and DS was at the 8th %tile. They considered inducing me right away, but when I went for the specialized u/s where they see if the baby is taking practice breaths, checked for umbilical cord flow, etc, he passed with flying colors. My placenta was calcified to the point that it looked like a 41-weeker at 34 weeks. Probably due to high blood pressure. I was scared to death. My water broke at 36 weeks and DS was born weighing 3 lbs. 10 oz. They found at my c-section that I have a Unicornuate Uterus (or essentially a half a uterus), and that along with my high blood pressure caused DS to be so small. He was in the intermediate NICU for 12 days and we brought him home at 3 lbs. 15 oz. I was told the IUGR babies often do much better than preemies of the same size because they somehow "know" they need to prepare themselves for an early delivery. If you want to email me with any questions feel free: goodgolly79 at gmail dot com. Sending you T&Ps! Good luck!
