c-section incision is bleeding...is that normal?

I had DS#2 about 3 weeks ago and my incision is bleeding (very lightly) on the right side.  I noticed because i was having discomfort around the entire incision.   I have been lifting DS #1 who is 30 lbs quite a bit.  any experience with this?  It is not a ton of blood, just very light.

  • I would call your OB.

  • I never had incision bleeding with either of my two. It's probably nothing, but I'd call your dr to be sure.

  • My incision bled a little bit and my OB said that it was fine.

It was something about the fact that the incision was stapled, small spots could take longer to close up or actually open back up with no worries... She did say that if there was A LOT of bleeding then I'd need to come back in.

  • Is it blood or does it look like watery pink blood??? I had what I called watery pink blood and the hospital told me it was the fatty layer draining. TMI. It's the layer just under your skin.  They told me not to worry.  What they didn't tell me was that when it was leaking to dry it off either with a hair dryer or a fan. (I didn't find this out until later from my cousin who'd had a c-section at a different hospital) and so because I wasn't drying my incision I got an infection.  I caught the infection early and only had pain for a day.  But, I would check with your OB and make sure everything is okay!!! You don't want an infection because then it will make lifting your older child even more painful!!!

  • Definitely check with your OB. It's probably nothing, but mine bled a good deal and it turned out that a pocket had formed between the old c-section scar tissue and the new incision and blood from a hematoma that the doctor caused during surgery was collecting in it.  Bleah.  I had to go back to the hospital numerous times (4 x a week!) to have special wound care and the darned thing just finally closed this week... 11 weeks later... yuck.
