Free manual BP @ Baptist?

So I've been looking in to the Breast Pump thing all effin day! I finally decided I would start with the manual before buying the electric and see how it goes. As of right now I'm debating between the Medela Harmony and the Avent Isis.

I read on the BFing board that some women, their hospital gave them a free manual pump when they checked out. Does anyone know if Baptist does this?

TIA!

Re: Free manual BP @ Baptist?

  • If they have them available they will. I tried to get them for 2 months post partum because I really needed to pump, and my 1 pump wasn't doing much. I recommend you call (they rent them out of the palmetto bay baptist center) so you can try to get one from now just in case.

  • I've been on the fence about them, too.  At first, I registered for the Medela Pump in Style set with the dual electric pumps at BBB and figured I'd buy it with the completion coupon afterwards.  However, it's pretty pricey and IDK how much I'll actually use it.  So, I decided to go with a single, electric pump from Medela just to have ready when baby arrives.  I've definitely heard to go with electric over manual.  A couple of friends have mentioned renting the BP.  One lives in Broward and mentioned that the Pill Box Pharmacies will rent them out and the monthly fee can be applied to the purchase of the BP if you choose to eventually keep it.  IDK if all the BP rental places work that way.  But, it may be worth it.

  • Not to burst your bubble, but if you intend to breastfeed and plan to go back to work, I highly recommend getting the electric double breast pump within a month of giving birth.  You'll need to start building up a stash plus may wish to start to give a bottle of expressed  milk by around 6 weeks.

I don't know anyone who gets very much at all from a manual pump.  I have had to express milk manually when I was engorged and without my pump, and I got hardly enough to bother keeping the milk, plus it took forever.

Also, I was very very glad that I had my pump immediately after my first child's birth b/c he was admitted to the NICU and was not released when I was discharged.  I went home and immediately started pumping.  Granted, you could always rent the hospital pump, but I was glad to have my own.

See if you know anyone who has one and who is willing to sell/give it to you.  For me, it was a hand-me-down from my SIL.

Exactly this!!! I recommend not to buy the pump before giving birth though. You never know the situation when you have the baby and even though you may plan on BFing/pumping, you just never know. My brother was a great guy and when I was ready to pump he picked up my Ameda double electric pump. This was the very best investment. Lasted me  the 13 months I BFed/pumped and never had an issue; plus not as pricey as some of the other pumps and worked as good as the hospital heavy duty pumps.

I will be a SAHM and once I actually do "work" again I'll be doing it from home since I own my own business. Needing to pump massive quantaties really isn't going to be necessary. The reason for pumping is just so that DH can participate by feeding LO a bottle at night or at some point during the day. When they're so small there's only so many ways you can interact with them. So I'll only be pumping maybe once/twice a day max. Otherwise J will be EBF'd if I can manage to do so.

I figure I have nothing else to do but be home with him so I might as well :)

Re: the pump itself.....I've been reading on them all day and I guess the experience with it varies. A lot of the comments I read were that Moms seemed to get a lot more milk from the manual vs. the electric. The electric was definitely more time efficient and less of a hassle and good for overnight pumping sessions when you're half asleep. Very few said they got more out of their electric. I guess everyones boobs are different :)

C, I know they rent electric pumps  from the PB location. They do the manual pumps also? I wouldn't think they'd rent the manual ones since they're only like $35. What I had read was that some hospitals give you one when you check out. I didn't know if that was something Baptist did when you left the hospital with baby or if you met with an LC while there.

Adri, I actually didn't know Medela made a cheaper single electric till yesterday. I entertained the idea of it but saw that the reviews on it were for the most part terrible. : The majority said the suction on it was bad and that the motor died super quick.

Aha.  Staying at home is a totally different situation, so I agree that there is not the need for a pump that will do daily duty and need to be able to pull 15-25 oz out of you on a daily basis.  In that case, I would wait. (Although with my second kid, I was so engorged that I used the pump to relieve some of the pressure--which you could do with a manual pump too).

Incidentally, I delivered my second kid at Baptist, and I did not receive a free manual pump from them, but it may be b/c I didn't ask to see the LC.  I delivered my first kid at South Miami, and since he was admitted to the NICU before I was discharged, they brought me the hospital pump to use while I was there, and they brought me all the pump supplies, including a manual pump.  I believe it went on the bill, so insurance probably paid for most of it and I paid my 10%.

I am surprised that there were so many people who said that they got more from a manual pump, though.  I don't know anyone in real life who got more that way, and I know a lot of people who pumped!  Maybe they were comparing to some really crappy electric pumps! LOL.  I used a Medela Pump in Style for my first kid and for most of the first year of my second kid.  I only replaced it when it got stolen, and I went for the new Medela Freestyle b/c I was using it daily at work and at home.  That one was excellent, although definitely pricey.

If you decide to get a Medela, I recommend not going with BRU, Target, or similar big store.  The best prices I found when I looked came from websites like worldwidesurgical.com, where you have to call them to get the price.  The Medela that, at the time was retailing for around $380, was $284 on that website, and they had free shipping, too. Medela has awesome  customer service, too.  When a part on my hand-me-down 7 year old pump broke, they overnighted me a new piece.  Awesome.

I'm still on the fence about what to do.  IDK if I want to invest $300 into something that may not get much use.  I may just rent the Medela Pump in Style or the Freestyle and if I see it is something I'll use often, I'll purchase it.  At least, what you pay in the rental fee is applied to the purchase price.

Ah, I just realized you would want a manual one. I'm not really sure about those to be honest. The one they lent me was electric. They didn't give it to me when I checked out but then again, I took my own pump (idiot move let me tell you). I had a single pump so it was a pain because A never latched and I couldn't get all my supply out. The ones the hospitals have are 100x better than the ones you buy (or at least than the medela one I bought). Anyhow, the LC will go see you anyway to help you out (and all the nurses help you out as well). So I guess you can ask them there about the manual. I would stick with the electric ones though if you can (much easier and I'm sure a little less painful). GL:)
