Postpartum Depression

Chances of having PPD with #2?

Hey all.

I was diagnosed with PPD shortly after Fay was born. Now, at almost 8 months, I do feel MUCH better. DH and I are talking about when and if we should try for another sometime soon. When I think of the possibility of having PPD again, I really hesitate. Does anyone know if there's an increased risk of having PPD again with a second baby? Thanks so much!

  • I don't know the answer to that question, but would love to see what anyone has to say!  I have the same hesitation!

  • That's one of my fears too.

My doc told me that there are women who have it with #1, not with #2 or have it with #2 not with #1, have it with the 1st kid then have no issues with the next 5 kids they have, etc. Certainly there's an elevated risk having had it once, but she said that it shouldn't hold me back - that the risk is small and even if it did happen again, I got through it once and would be better at recognizing/getting help the second time around.

  • Not sure if there is an increased risk or not.  I know I had it after my first but didn't with my second.  I wonder if it's more prevalent with first babies?

Studies show that that if you had it with #1, you're at risk for having it again with #2.

Now that I am pregnant (total surprise) with #2, my OB is monitoring me very closely for pre-natal and post-natal depression. I see a therapist as well and she has met with DH as well to try to work out a plan in the event that I experience it again.

But then, I think I had 'issues' even prior to PPD.

Also, there are some GREAT doctors who special in reproductive psychology who might be able to help you. There is an awesome one in my area, but she doesn't accept my insurance and I can't afford to pay out of pocket. :-(
