Tell me about the Bumbo seat, exersaucers, and jumpers

I'm thinking about getting a bumbo seat for Elena. Have you used one and would you recommend getting one?

She's 3 months, 15 pounds, and 24 inches.

Also, what are your thoughts on exersaucers and jumper exercisers? when's a good time to start using them?

Re: Tell me about the Bumbo seat, exersaucers, and jumpers

  • We have a jumperoo and a bumbo.  We use the jumper all.the.time, but that wasn't until closer to 5 months.  We aren't such big fans of the bumbo.  It works to help him sit up, but we just don't use it much.  I tend to sit on the floor with him or let him roll around the floor and try to learn to crawl.  We never fed him in the bumbo either which I know some do.  It just hasn't been that useful for us.

  • Bumbo is for helping babies learn to sit...I would assume that your DD is likely sitting on her own now at 8 months.

The jumperoo and exersaucer are similar - babies can spin and play with multiple toys and bounce...moreso in the jumperoo than the exersaucer.  We went with the jumperoo because it really added the bouncing element to help strengthen her legs.

Oops, I thought I read 3 months on her ticker.  I need to go to bed...

The ticker is counting down to the birthday. 8 months till! You were awake enough to do the math in your head!

We had a bumbo. We didn't use it a ton, but it did make for some great photo ops (put baby in bumbo in front of a flower bed and take a gazillion pictures!) It was fun, but not necessary. It's something I might buy again if I found it used, but that's it.

Not having a lot of space we didn't want both an exersaucer and a jumperoo. We went with a jumper because T had used one at a friends house and went nuts with it. She LOVED to jump. I put her in an exersaucer some time after that and she looked at me like she was saying "what is the point of the boring thing, mom??"

  • she's 3 months and 2 days but I don't know how to create a ticker that shows this instead of counting down to her b-day.

She can sit now, if we prop her up with a pillow, so I though the bumbo will give her a new vantage point. I think I'll buy it used.

When do you think it's a good time to get the jumper? Also, did you use a door-frame jumper or a stand alone unit?

    Thanks!

  • We had both, but the stand alone is much better because it has things on it to entertain her. I did get the doorframe jumper to put in our office doorway, but we only used it a few times.

  • I found the Bumbo to be rather useless. My son never looked very comfortable in it. Perhaps it was those chunky thighs!

We had an Exersaucer, and he loved it. I didn't know about the Jumperoo when I registered for the Exersaucer, but I'm sure he would have loved the Jumperoo too. We definitely didn't want both since they are so big.

  • I have all 3 and started using all 3 when her head was fully supported which was around 3 months.  The bumbo chair is really only until they can sit on their own which is around 7 months (so it's only a 4 month use).  The exersaucer and jumpreoo is used until they're close to 10-12 months.  I limit the time I put her in the exersauce and jumperoo because it can affect their motor skills (no more than 15-20 mins at a time).

  • I didn't like the bumbo at all, but others rave about it. We didn't do the doorway jumper as my hubby is paranoid and thinks they appear unsafe. We didn't have a jumper exerciser at home, but they had one at the gym that Grant LOVED. It was fisher price.
  • I am crazy!  So sorry for not reading your ticker correctly.  I was clearly too tired to be responding.  Your DD might enjoy a bumbo.  We didn't get much use out of our bumbo since DD was an early sitter and from the sounds of it your DD will be too!
  • I thought the Bumbo wasn't great, either.  We even got the tray, and it's still in the box!  We used it a few times, but usually, we could prop him up , or put him in another apparatus (jumperoo, booster chair).  We also had a booster chair - so we fed him in that when he was young.  We had the jumperoo (stand alone).  DS was ok with it, but he didn't really LOVE it.  I think he would have liked the exersaucer better b/c there are more things to look at, and he is much more of an observer than active.  Also, he was a shorty (30% for height), so it took a long time for his legs to reach the ground, and the telephone books we put underneath just weren't as fun to try to jump off of, I'm sure.
  • Ian loooooooooved his FP jumperoo.  It was by far his favorite toy.  Since we didn't have room for both that and an exersaucer, I could only pick one.  I thought the jumperoo looked more fun anyway.  I think we started using it around 4.5mos.

We didn't get a Bumbo either; I just sat him on the floor in the middle of the Boppy b/c I already had it.

  • With DD, she loved the bumbo and we got a ton of use out of it. She was tall and skinny and not very "athletic" (late rolling over, late crawler, etc). With the tray on and some toys on it she was happy sitting in it while I took a shower for quite a long time. AFter she could sit well on her own, I still put her in it while I fixed her hair so she couldn't get away from me.

She still fits in at 3yr and likes to use it as a chair.

DS is very strong and doesn't like to be contained, he can already arch his back and pop out of it. Plus his thighs are chunkier and don't fit in it as well.

  • I loved our bumbo and jumperoo.  We travel a lot so the bumbo was easy to throw in the car and use as a bath seat as well as another place for him to sit.  I'm slightly embarassed to admit that we still use the bumbo at our farm to bathe DS since we only have a shower and he hates it.  (He is fairly skinny and still fits...ha!)  I also really liked our jumperoo and so did DS.  He would sit in there for at least 20 mins at a time and you would be amazed at how much you can get done in that amount of time these days!  It's all a personal choice and unfortunately you probably won't know until after you purchase if they will work for you.  Good luck!

  • DS1 loved the bumbo, but DS2 didn't - so definitely borrow or get it used.

We have the exersaucer, and both really liked it for spurts of time, especially DS2, who loves it now... I just try to limit its use for when I really need to contain or entertain him for a few minutes.
