Throwing Food

When DS is in his high chair, he constantly throws food, sippy cups, utensils, etc. We have tried telling him "No", and he smiles. We tried smacking his hand, and he smiles. We have tried ignoring him, and he screams. Is this a phase?? Do you have any recommendations of what to do???

Re: Throwing Food

  • Let him do it and just ignore it.  Anything else makes it more fun.  Never clean it up when DS will see it.  It will go away as soon as he realizes no one else is giving it attention.  DD stopped about 2 months ago.

  • DD eats in a booster chair, and so when she throws food, we pull her away from the table and ignore her. She gets the point fairly quickly.

I personally like the ignore it thing.  And ditto not letting him see you clean it up if you do choose this method.

I know some people have had success with the 'drop 3 pieces of food' and it's gone thing, but honestly I think this turns it into a game especially if it's something they don't like.

Oh, and throwing food is completely normal, and they do outgrow it!
