C-section Mamas!

This is my first c-section, going in on Tuesday. Can you give me your #1 must have at the hospital or c-section tip you think saved the day?? I'm a tad nervous! Thanks!

Re: C-section Mamas!

  • Steal lots of mesh underwear to bring home and/or buy granny panties that won't hit right at your incision.  GL!

  • Mine was no where near as bad as everyone said it would be so relax. High waisted undies and loose pants are a must I went up a size from small to med because the area around the incision is very sore. GL and congrats :)
  • get up and walk around as soon as you can! It helps with recovery and staves off gas pain. Also ask for a binder and where it whenever you are out of bed. gl!

  • Hi! I remember you From 3rd tri. Glad to see your coming on over. My c/s was awesome. Very easy so don't fret. I would say have your DH help you as much as possible (or someone u don't mind seeing your lady parts) using the bathroom bc u won't be able to bend too much. And as soon as u feel up for it start walking around. It will make u heal faster. Just don't strain yourself. Good Luck.

  • I agree with all the PP and especially walk around ASAP!  Also it helped me to hold a pillow on my incision site when I walked, sneezed, coughed, laughed etc. for the first couple days!  GL!
  • Mine wasn't bad at all and the recovery was not bad either.  Stay ahead of the pain - so if you can have pain killers every 4 hours - take it!  Even if you are not feeling pain right at that moment.  If you wait until you are actually in pain, it takes a while for the drugs to kick in.  I don't like percoset, so I just took the Rx strength motrin and that was enough for me.

Ask for colace or any stool softener - it makes it easier to go.  You do NOT want to get constipated!  GL!  I'm sure it will go great.

  • Ask for a stool softner! The first time you go is killer (I never realized how much you use your stomach muscles for everything!).

  • I've had 2 c-sections and it really was no sweat.  The 2nd one was a little easier than the 1st one.  But I also had my c-sections 15 months apart...lol.  The best advice I can give you on making it a little easier is to get up and walk as soon as you feel up to moving.  It does help make things recover a bit quicker.  And a binder for your belly.  They are great for keeping firm but gentle pressure on your tummy.

Let family help you!  Even if you feel great and want to do a million things when you get home...don't push it.  Walking is good, but keep it within your limits.  GL!

  • Loving the advice! Thank you so much. The only other surgery I ever had was laproscopic removal of my gallbladder and I thought the pain was going to kill me and those were just 4 small incisions!!

I had the same gall-bladder surgery, and a c-section.  I won't lie, the c-section hurt worse.  But like pp said, stay on top of  the pain meds, even if you aren't in pain right then.  I liked the percocet and motrin together.  And steal all the mesh panties you can!  Those were great.  Take it easy, don't overdue yourself.  You'll be fine.  Good luck!!

Oh yes I am a pro on the mesh panties.... lol

  • I loved my yoga pants afterwards. THey kind of have a full panel like maternity jeans. My nurse recommended getting the full support underwear to keep everything tight but I never remembered to have DH get it.  Put a pillow up to your stomach for laughing coughing, etc. Good luck!
  • One thing I learned was if I had worn a bra without metal hooks in the back they would have let me wear it in the OR, but I did not so darn.  If you want covered up top and have a sports bra they may let you wear it.  I think it is kinda like wearing socks at your OB appt - at least something is covered!!

Good luck, recovery is way better than I expected, and also I agree Motrin every eight hours was the best pain med.

  • hey girl, i can't believe it's time for you! (remember me from high risk boards?)

Anyway this was my second section, and it's much better planned than having one after 23 hours of labor lol...it's really not that bad. Take a bunch of the mesh panties and as many pads as they'll give you. I bought a pack of comfy granny panties for home, and had a big package of jumbo pads here too.

Make sure you sit up and walk as soon as they let you, and keep moving. Don't overdo it but the more you move, the quicker you recover. My first one I made the mistake of laying down too much and it made it harder to feel better.

I didn't want to wear anything but the gown or a big nightshirt/gown bc pants were not comfy to get up and down, just my experience. I was fine to wear anything by the time I left though.

    1.  Steal lots of mesh undies

    2.  Walk ASAP

    3. Take your pain meds

    4. Take Colace with every dose of pain meds

    5. Buy some Bran muffins and eat lots of pears to help with pooping!

    6.  Buy some miralax, and take one or two doses after you get home to help move things along.

This was my 3rd section and by far the easiest.  I was most worried about the pooping b/c that was MISERABLE after the first 2, but I was prepared and it was very easy this time around.

  • Reading these posts makes me think I had a fairly easy recovery....

A few things that seemed to help:
Comfy pants/underwear, worn above incision. Nothing touching it (for 1-2 weeks).
Brought my own pads to hosp, by the end of our stay I didn't need the big ones anymore and they were SO uncomfortable.
Showering and getting dressed in my own clothes made me feel more normal!
Walking and sitting in chairs (vs. staying in bed).

Also, I didn't know this, but morphine gives you the sweats and "itchies". If you'll have morphine just be prepared for the 1st day to be very sweaty and your body gets itchy. It goes away but I thought something was seriously wrong with me!!!

  • I would suggest making sure that you have a bm before you go home.  My first c-section I didn't and two days later I was dry heaving in the middle of the night because I was so stopped up.  This time I stayed on them about making sure I had a bm and didn't have any problems at the hospital or when I got home.
  • I agree with everyone on here :)

    1. take as many mesh undies home as you can from the hospital

    2. definitely get up and try to walk around as much as possible.  As soon as your catheter comes out they have you try and stand.

    3. get a pain pump (just in case) and request a Rx for meds for home (just in case)

    4. Shower as soon as u feel like it...even though it won't be the best cleaning job, you'll feel 100x better

    5. comfy yoga pants are the best.

    6. ask for help! even though you might feel ok, you are still recovering after major abdominal surgery! Take it easy :)

    7. Drink tons of water and take the stool softeners...makes that first BM much easier to pass.  I even stayed on a soft diet after leaving the hospital.
