Anyone been through a tornado?

I keep seeing in the news about tornados. I don't know anyone that has been through it. It seems so scary.

Re: Anyone been through a tornado?

  • When I was younger, we had one go through our back yard. I also had one hit less than a mile from our house when I was in highschool and I was home alone while my parents were in Jamaica. LOL

  • Yep. We used to get them often when I was young. I had one hit our house once.

  • My coworker's brother's house was just hit yesterday.  His girlfriend was home at the time, and since they didn't have a basement, she went in a closet under the stairs.  When she came out, their roof and walls were gone.  That had to have been the most terrifying thing.  Can you imagine how loud that would have been?  Thank goodness she is safe!

Here's one of the pics he sent.  I guess there are youtube videos out there of it, too.

  • Our house was hit just over 2 yrs ago (old house - we've moved since).  We were home,I just got into the MBR closet with Ben and Nat was strapped in her carseat (for safety).  DH  and the dog didn't make it into the closet.  Neighbor's fence was thrown into & through our MBR window, Roof was a loss, siding/outer wall damage. 2 of the neighbor's trees came down - one along the back of our house, 1 between us and the neighbors' house.  About $25K in damage to our $80K house.  Our neighborhood was also hit in 2002, and our church was flattened in that one (just down the street). I was at work for that one....took me 4 hrs to get home (normally about 30 min).

When we bought our current house a basement was a requirement.;)

  • Tornadoes are a part of life in Kansas.  Thankfully, I haven't had any serious damage to a house I've lived in (please keep it that way!), but we've been pretty close many times.

When I was little, we lived in an old farm house.  My mom didn't trust that the house was very safe, so went the tornado warning went out for our county, my mom wanted to load us in the car and leave.  My cat just had kittens and I refused to leave them.  Since my brother and I had arms full of kittens, we couldn't get in the car very fast.  Just as soon as we got the doors open, the trees in the tree row behind our house started snapping off.  My mom rushed us back inside and we hid in the pantry under the stairs.  When we came out, there were a lot of trees down, including a massive one that was completely uprooted.  Our house was white and looked like it had green polka dots from all the tree leaves that were blown on it.  The house itself didn't have any damage. One nearby town was completely flattened two years ago and another about 4 years ago.  Scary, scary stuff.
