Washing new baby clothes, sheets, etc.

Is there anything special about washing baby items? I know I should use Dreft, we have All free and clear and are going to use that... but is there any special cycle settings I should put them on? I am going to start to get everything washed this weekend... I NEED SOMETHING TO KEEP ME OCCUPIED! :)

Thanks Ladies!

  • The first time I washed anything, I washed it all on the delicate cycle.  I tried to do that as much as possible with the baby items until I got some bad stains, and then I'd use the normal cycle.  I don't know that there's really a special cycle to use, it's just what felt right to me before the baby used/wore any of it.

  • there's no reason you should think you should have to use Dreft, Free and Clear detergent is probably better because there is no fragrance like Dreft.

Just follow the laundering instructions on the items like normal laundry - nothing special!

Exactly what I was going to say.

  • FWIW my OB, the pediatrician, and our dermatologist all said it isn't even necessary to us a free and clear type detergent unless you're baby has an allergic reaction or very sensitive skin.  According to them it is rare that a child would have a reaction to regular detergent (I think they were referring more to an actual allergy than a sensitivity).  And they said it defeats the purpse if you wash your clothes in regular detergent and their clothes in the "special stuff" because the baby is still being held up against your clothing that have been washed in the regular stuff.  We wash all of our laundry in the same detergent and have used both regluar and free and clear type stuff and have never had a problem with DD or the boys.

  • IdenticalTwins: Our pedi said the exact same thing about not needing to use a Free and Clear at all. K did react as a small infant when I washed something in regular Tide so we stuck with Free and Clear until about 10 months or so and then switched over to regular detergent. I totally blame DH. He has uber-sensitive skin and I am convinced he passed it along to her.

But yes, you're right. No need to use special stuff at all for most kiddos. Particularly with the new washers, they extract almost all residue. At least this is what my pedi tells me. :)

  • I would be careful with what you wash.  I washed a bunch of things I would have liked to return, for example, the ultimate crib sheet.

Ditto this. Don't wash anything that you aren't a hundred percent sure on. I washed everything and DD was so tiny that the seasons for clothes were SO off. She had all this summer stuff in 3-6 months but she didn't wear 3-6 months until November and I couldn't return anything because I washed it...very depressing. I also washed our ultimate crib sheet and a bunch of sleep sacks that she never used. I didn't like the ultimate crib sheet because it stretched so tight that sometimes the snaps would pop in the middle of the night and I worried she'd get stuck under the two layers. She was about 6 months when we tried it.
