Lovenox ladies epidural question...

Are you planning on getting an epidural?  Is your doctor going to induce labor to be sure you are able to get it?

I NEED an epidural.  I speak from experience :)  I am terrified that I will go into labor and not be able to get it.  My labor with DS #1 was only about 12 hours, which I think is kind of short for a first baby.  I'm scared this one will be shorter and I won't have time.

Re: Lovenox ladies epidural question...

  • I was a planned induction with DS#1 and my lovenox was stopped so I would be able to get the epidural. I ended up with a c-section but my platelet count was fine for me to get the spinal block.

  • I was induced with #2 and will be this time as well.  I take my last shot 24 hours before the induction - I think mainly to make the epidural an option.  Although I didn't get an epidural last time and don't want one this time either.  Too scary for me!
  • I switch to Heparin around 35 weeks so there won't be a problem.  Consult your hemotologist about it (make sure to tell him/her that your 1st labor was only 12 hours).

  • I will be induced on 6/21 for this reason.  I'll take my last Lovenox shot on Sunday evening and then have Cervadil placed on Monday evening...by the time I need the epi on Tuesday, the Lovenox will be totally out of my system.  My OB has said multiple times, "If you feel like you might be having contractions/going into labor, hold off on the Lovenox until we can check you out".  That way, if I go into labor on my own, I can sill have the option of the epi.

I have to have an epidural since I'm expecting twins (in case of 1 vaginal delivery and 1 emergency c/s I don't want to be put under general anesthesia).  I'll be switched from Lovenox to Heparin around 32 or 33w.  Since Heparin leaves your system faster and can be reversed (in case things move too quickly) I'll be covered.

Yes, and yes.  I had an epi with my first daughter, and absolutely plan on having one with this one.  My first was 3 weeks early, so we'll be switching from Lovenox to Heparin soon so that an epi will be possible.

  • I asked my OB this very question.  I will be switching from lovenox to  heparin @ 36 wk and also stopping the baby aspirin.  My big concern was also the time table.  I was induced with #1 (diff. Dr. and prior to knowing about clotting issues) and my labor was only 6 hrs from start of induction to delivery!  She said our hospital policy for epi is 3 days from last lovenox injection or 4 hr from last heparin injection.  She said induction is definately an option but not a must.  I know it's very unlikely to go into labor immediately after giving myself a shot but I'm nervous about my quick deliveries!
  • I switched from lovenox to heparin at 36weeks 3 days. My water broke at 37 weeks about an hr after I took the heparin shot. When I got to L&D they did a bleeding time on me (done about 5hrs after my injection). After they got the result they gave me the ok for the epidural. I got it, labored a few more hrs, and ended up with a c-section. I had no complications from the epidural or the c-section at all.
