Which is the more traditional spelling?

We want to use Elyse as a middle name if we find out we're having a girl, but I just looked it up and Elyse is Spanish. However, if we spell it Elise, it's French, which is what we want. Does anyone know what spelling is more common and traditional, or are they both about the same?

I know an Elyse and an Elise.

According to the Social Security Administration website, Elise was #211 last year and Elyse was #651.

I grew up with an Elyse and I always liked how different her name looked, but how easy it was to say.

BUT...with that being said, using the 'y' looks like another trendy use of the letter. I would go with Elise. Beautiful name!!!

Either is traditional, but I doubt Elyse is Spanish - it would be pronounced "eh-LEE-say", which I've never heard of in Spanish-language culture; I think "Elisa" is the Spanish derivative and they all stem from Elizabeth.

So, you're not being all modern hippie spelling with the "y". Either way will be fine, and I'm generally a spelling purist.

My great grandparents are from France, and g-grandma was Elise (b. 1800's), so this is the spelling I consider more original.

Elyse got popular I think because that is the way the Family Ties character spelled it - it's English, as opposed to Elise which has a few other countires in its origin. So to me, it's a part of the Y trend.

For me, if it comes down to two spellings, I always go for the most popular. You don't want your child constantly have to correct others on the spelling.
