Re: foil highlights during first tri

  • I read in What To Expect When You're Expecting that you should avoid all over color during first tri... but I think it said highlights are okay because the color doesn't touch the scalp. Curious to see what the Dr. says though, as I'm wondering about this as well (I get a full head of highlights every 5-6 wks).

  • I colored my hair at 4 weeks. The salon I go to uses all-natural, plant based products and I checked with my ob who said it was fine. I've heard foils are OK no matter what dye is used since it doesn't really touch your scalp. The only other concern is that your hormones can affect how the color is absorbed by your hair. I'm pretty conservative when it comes to what you can and can't do, but I felt fine about this. I have another color appointment scheduled at the end of July. Good luck! :)

  • I think highights are probably fine. I have quite a few friends who are hair dressers and they got their hair done while pregnant, so I trust that. I am planning to get highlights around the beginning of July since I'll be going to the beach. I would say you're good to go!~

  • I've heard mixed messages about that.  I would probably avoid for myself, but I think you should do what you are comfortable with.

  • At my first appt with my doctor I asked her if I could dye my hair and she said yes.  I got highlights done a week ago.  I had also read lots of conlifcting things about dying your hair while pg, so I'm not sure if it was the right decision, but its done now.
  • I asked my OB this yesterday - and she said it's fine to get highlights! Big Smile

  • Dr said it was fine to do highlights because they don't touch the scalp. I will go as long as I can but I am pretty sure I will be touching up in a couple of weeks.

  • I'd do foil... Like the PP's said, it doesn't really touch your scalp. I'm having my lowlights done next week.
  • last pregnancy I was told to wait to do anything until after first trimester.  The dr. said that highlights shouldn't pose a risk but there is so much conflicting information that she says to do nothing until after first trimester.  My hair looks terrible but that is what I am going to do again....plus I don't know how long I can make it without throwing up...and don't want to run out of there :)

  • The nurse at my RE said it would be fine. It was also on the list from my Dr of things that are OK. I get highlights wrapped in foil.
  • My OB said hair dye was fine, but she warned that smell might make me nauseous (I told her I've been having smell sensitivity). I don't dye my hair, so its not much of an issue with me.

  • Personally, I never worried about it.  The formulas on most of the hair coloring has changed so much since these warnings first came out.  As long as you are in a well-ventilated area, you should be fine.  And, foil highlights don't usually sit directly on your scalp.

  • Every doctor has a different opinion. My SIL and I went to the same office when we were pg, but saw different doctors. Hers said it was fine and mine didn't want me to color in the first trimester. Just wait and talk to your doctor specifically!
  • I had my hair colored and highlighted my entire first pregnancy every 6 weeks, and will continue to do so with this one.  My son is perfectly healthy.

  • My sister-in-law is a hair stylist so of course she is around the dyes, fumes, etc. all the time.  She is on her 3rd pregnancy and all have been healthy little guys.
  • highlights are ok because they don't touch the scalp.  Just make sure salon is well ventalated.  Sp?  I am getting mine done next week!
