Hospital Bag Planning

I figure I'll be packing my hospital bag over the long weekend for the 4th, since I'll be about 35 weeks then.  I'm trying to decide if I should pack clothes for myself other than what I plan on wearing home. I always feel better if I'm somewhat dressed, but I've been told that anything I put on will be ruined, so don't bother.

I'm not planning on getting fully dressed, but was thinking more like a nursing top and yoga pants.

Did you stay in the hospital gown the whole time, or did you change into something else later?

Re: Hospital Bag Planning

  • I felt a lot better when I put on my own gown and/or nursing tank and pants.  The massive mesh panties and diaper pads didn't really leak onto anything.

  • After the first night, once I was able to get out of bed and shower (c-sect), I wore my own gowns that I brought from home.

I actually only wore the hospital gown.  I did bring a robe though.  I was in a way too much pain to really give a damn about how I looked.  If I wasn't laying in bed then I had the robe on.  It wasnt like I was flashing people. :)

  • I felt 100 times better when I put on my yoga pants and tshirt.  Like Amy said the giant sized pads can keep anything in...nothing of mine got ruined.
  • if you're planning on nursing, go get fitted for a really good nursing bra.  I really loved the Bravado Body Silk bras - they are spendy ($50 ea) BUT...they are wire free and super super supportive.  The nursing tanks were not supportive enough for me at the beginning and they caused me SO MUCH PAIN.  I lived in those nursing bras.

I lived in huge lounge pants, my nursing bra and my lightweight knit robe.  (I had a c-section too).

Bring an extra pillow (or two) and a blanket - I have a down throw I brought - we got chilly at night.

  • I second the Bravado nursing bra!

Also, I felt tons better when I put on my own gowns from home (never wore shirt/pants).  I didn't have a robe, though.  And like the pp's said, the mesh panties and pads were like the Hoover Dam.

  • I wasn't in a hospital, but I spent the majority of my laboring time in my robe that I brought from home. After I gave birth, and before we left, I was pretty much naked minus the adult diaper I was wearing (and so glad I bought them, they were my best friends for the next couple of days after the birth). I wore a pair of gauchos and a nursing tank home the next day. The one suggestion I will give re: nursing bras/tanks. I'm not sure how they do the sizing on nursing bras as I still haven't gotten fitted for one. But I would just suggest getting some tanks for now. And then getting fitted for a bra *after* your milk comes in. I couldn't believe how much more my chest size increased once my milk came in. I actually had to go back to target and get the next size up in the nursing tanks I bought.
  • I have to agree with most everyone else. I too felt soooo much better after my first shower and putting my own clothes on. I too, wore yoga/lounge pants and nursing tanks. I didn't ruin anything. Those panties and pads are massive!!

I also second bringing your own pillows and a blanket. Eeek! You're getting close! Hard to believe!

what I LOVED about the Body Silk Bras is that they come in a "range" of sizes - you buy S,M,L, XL, XXL, etc so they fit a range of band and cup sizes.  That way you can wear them before your milk comes in and they should still fit afterwards (It did for me)

The only reason I say no tanks at first - at least for me - is that they didn't provide enough support and I ended up damaging my left nipple for a few days.  As soon as I put the bra on, instead of the tank, I felt IMMEDIATE relief.  I needed more support at first than the tank provided.

I was/am(?) a 40D bra and I bought XL bras - they fit throughout my year of nursing.

I'm a 40D now, and trying to decide what size to order.   I'm afraid if my boobs get any bigger, they are going to need their own zip code.
