Guess what guys... Zachary got chicken pox from his varicella vax that he had at his 18 month appt! I couldn't believe it! He was not in any pain from what we could tell (no itching/scratching) and he just seemed much more tired than usual. There were less than 20 spots!
I have been worried for MONTHS that I would catch it when he got vax'ed since it's been about 15 years since I was vaccinated myself (I never had CP as a child), but I was just fine, thankfully. I find it funny that he ended up "catching" it since I was so worried ![]()
Fortunately it didn't last very long, there wasn't much discomfort, & he recovered quickly.
Just thought I would share!
Re: Chicken Pox Vaccine
I hope he feels better soon!
You know, I didn't know about the vaccine when I was teaching kindergarten and I always wondered why none of them would get chicken pox. I remember when I was in kindergarten, all the moms wanted to expose all their kids to it so that they could get it when they were little. I know of a few people who got it in high school or as adults and it was pretty bad.
The reason why people prefer to have their child catch "the real deal" is because you can actually get the chicken pox SEVERAL times eventhough you have had the vaccine, since your body never really build a total immunity against it (unlike when you get the chicken pox naturally, you only get in once!)
Adri- the chicken pox vaccine is fairly new, like around when Sebastian was born. They don't even have it in most of Europe.
If you get it more than once doesn't it come back more sever, like the shingles?

Not always. I had a friend who had it at age 3 and then again at age 8. It was just regular chicken pox the 2nd time. Crazy she got it 2x though.
