poll: buying a domain name for your baby?

Would you ever do this? Just to make sure they'd have it if they ever wanted it? We're big ole nerds so I'm considering it (firstnamelastname.com domain names are available for both boys). Is that just techie overkill or do you think it might be handy some day?

I don't know. How much does it cost? Do you own it forever? I might do it if it were cheap enough... why not? Doesn't look like his name leads to a website yet...

I actually had a domain for myfirstnamelastname.com for several years. But then I got married and then I wish I didn't have myfirstnamemaidenname.com =P So I ended up not renewing my domain when it expired this year...so I voted for maybe. This situation doesn't really apply to boys as much, although some guys change their last names when they get married. The only thing is that you would be paying for a domain (two in your case) for 10+ years until they're able to use it...unless you were going to maintain websites for them until they take over?

It's about $9 a year through namecheap.com (I prefer them over godaddy, although I know godaddy is more popular). You only own it forever if you keep renewing it - you can initially buy it for anywhere from 1 to 10 years.

I'm not sure - I was thinking about this as well. I could host photos for family and friends on their sites, I suppose? Otherwise I'd just own the names and not develop the sites.

Hmm... maybe if I could use it as a link to our family blog. But that might not work if we go on to have other children. Otherwise, I probably wouldn't buy it just to buy it.

ummm I wasn't sure how to answer so I turned around and asked MH.... he said "oh I keep forgetting, we need to buy A's domain for her" LOL

when I brought up inamra's point, he said "well, she can use it for at least 20-some years at least"

so, I guess that answers your question?

I probably wouldn't. MH is sitting next to me, and I just asked him his thoughts on this (it would never has even occurred to me until I read this). He made a good point that if your child ever invented a product, or wanted to start a business, they would probably use the product/business name for a website, not their personal name. And I guess I'm just not that techie of a person to have my own website just for the fun of it, but I know others are.

good point. DH wants [lastname]law.com and it's taken. nothing is there though so someone is just parked there.

since you are all much more web savvy than us what does it mean when there isn't actually a site there and it says:

   Domain Name: [lastname]LAW.COM

he has no chance of ever getting it for a reasonable amount I bet. He did register [fullname]law.com though.

I voted no, but not b/c I think it is too techie. I just don't see the need, BUT with that said. One of my friends became an Olympic athlete & he wanted his name for a website, but one of our "business savvy" friends had already bought the name & was willing to sell it back to him, but for a higher fee. So I guess anything is possible!
