Drop-side crib question

DD has a drop side crib.  It has not currently been recalled.  We intend to buy the same crib, but with two stationary sides for DD2.

My question - should we put the 15 month old in the drop-side, or the newborn?  I don't anticipate the NB sleeping in the crib for the first 4-5 months at least, so I'm thinking - give DD1 the stationary side until she's ready for a toddler bed, then use the drop-side for the toddler bed and give the stationary side to the younger sister.  The only thing is, DD2 will probably be in the crib for naps.  WWYD?

Re: Drop-side crib question

  • What are the chances of the 15 month old being ready for a toddler bed?  It might be nice to avoid two cribs.

I like this idea. I know it was a different time and everything (not everyone had toddler beds!) but my parents just got tired of having the crib around and moved me to a twin bed when I was about 18 months. My mom said that my arms and legs might hang off but most of me would be curled up in a corner and I never fell out until I had chicken pox and my eyes crusted over. I was 7 by then.

  • I don't know.  They'll be sharing a room - do you think that'll make a difference?  The then-15-month-old is currently 10.5 months and doesn't really move in her sleep, but she does stand up in her crib when she wakes up.  It would be great to not have two cribs, but I thought 15-18 months would be a little young.  I'm open to suggestions, though!

I was going to suggest a toddler bed too.  I moved #1 just after 18 months and he did really well.  he wasn't climbing out or anything, but I did not want to buy two cribs when #2 came along.

  • DS did a toddler bed at 15 months and did fantastic. Good luck!
  • We are trying to transition DD to her room for naps rather than the crib in our room.  We put a mattress on the floor and she took to it immediately.  I'm hoping at some point soon we can start her out there at night.  :-)  You might try the crib mattress on the floor?

Why not just put your 15 mo crib mattress on the floor.  This is becoming quite popular because then the bed is at the right height for your LO and allows them to be more self sufficient or some such thing.  I forgot what method it is but it's widely used and quite progressive.

    edit: it's the Montessori approach.

  • DD was 13 months when we moved her to a twin mattress on the floor.  Yes, she gets up to find us but it's better than having 2 cribs...if you have an air mattress you could try that to see how she does.
