Do I need a Baby Monitor

I live in a very small condo. There really isn't one spot in the place where I wont' be able to hear the LO cry.  Monitors aren't that expensive but if I don't need one I'd rather not spend the money. What are your thoughts? Are they necessary even in a small  house?

Re: Do I need a Baby Monitor

  • I'm in a similar situation and I've been wondering the same thing.  I think I might register for one so that when we move to a bigger place, we'll have it.  But if we don't get it as a gift, then we'll probably just wait until we need one to buy one.

  • same for us we live in a small place so we'll register and see. However my mom's house is bigger and we go down there frequently so we may get one and leave it there to use for baby naps and such.

  • We live in a 2 bedroom apartment. DD's door is seriously 4 inches away from our bedroom door. I was kind of freaked out about not having a moniter, but it works out quite well. This way, I don't wake up everytime she grunts or sighs.

  • DD was born in late February and we also had a small condo at the time.  Once she moved into her own room we did get a monitor.  Her side of the condo and our side had separate heat controls and with both heats on, I could not always hear her.  Does that make sense?  I would also apply this to a/c...

  • My house is tiny and similarly we will be able to hear LO wherever we are.  We still got a video monitor.  That way we can see if we really need to go in there when she is upset without waking/upsetting her even more.  Will also allow us to sit out on the back deck, and I think it will be particularly usefeul when we are visiting family.

  • We have monitors.  We're in a 3 story townhouse.  We spend a lot of time in the garage (car/racing stuff) and have 2 dogs we take outside every few hours on a leash.  I might not answer everytime she cries ... but I'd like to know what's going on!
  • Honestly, no, you don't NEED one. Our house is 2 stories and I can hear him cry from anywhere in it.  But, I have thoroughly enjoyed our video monitor simply b/c it has allowed me to be able to check on him without actually going into his room which ends up disturbing him.  There are times when he would cry out in his sleep and if I just left him, he'd roll over and go back to sleep.  But if I ran in there, he'd wake up and we'd all be up for hours.  So just for my own sanity... I'm glad I bought the video monitor.

  • I dont think it is 100% needed but I do love having my video monitor. I didn't think I would use it as often as I do now. If baby was napping and I wanted to mow the lawn or plant flowers outdoors I would constantly be able to see and hear her. It was so nice because if she started crying I could look at the monitor to see if something was wrong or if it was a dream or her just readjusting. I will be using the video monitor with my second baby as well.
