Babies: 9 - 12 Months

Solids ?, I know, I know...

Annoying right?

So we just started Rice Cereal the beginning of this week. Little man is so not impressed. He'll maybe take 3-4 bites total, doesn't want to open his mouth, etc.

I'm assuming this is normal? He's just getting used to it right?

Tell me your experience when first starting on solids please.

  •  That was my experience.  But I kept at it and now my DS is eating us out of house and home.  Keep trying...he'll catch on eventually!

On a related note - my DS did not like rice cereal and it actually constipated him.  He LOVES oatmeal.  Perhaps try that...

When it came to rice cereal, DS could take it or leave it.  Now oatmeal is a different story...the boy loves him some oatmeal!

  • We tried rice cereal first and he was not impressed at all.  I tried oatmeal next and he liked it much better.  I didn't do this for too long though, maybe a couple of weeks and I immediately went to fruits and vegetables.
  • DS hated rice cereal when we started it too. His 6 month appointment was about a week after we started and his pedi said we could move on to fruits and veggies if we wanted so we did that. After about a month of fruits and veggies we tried rice cereal again and now he likes it. I don't know if it made a difference but when we first tried it we made it with formula, now we make it with water. Keep trying and he'll get the hang of it.

Have you tasted rice cereal? It tastes like glue. I would try something else before assuming solids aren't going well.

My daughter really disliked sweet potato, but once we tried pears and peas she was happy to eat.

Oh I know!  I'm not freaking out about it or assuming it's not going well. Just wondering what others experiences were.

We'll try oatmeal and then move to veggies and fruits.

    Thanks for the advice.

  • my babies didnt love food right away...it took some time.  we started w/ avocado though (and then we did peas and green beans).  I actually only used oatmeal to thicken things.  Its so bland on its own, my babies like flavor.

  • My LO never would take rice cereal alone.  We started with banana puree, apple puree, and pear puree at 5 months.  Maybe try apple puree or peas puree and see if he'll take to those better?
  • Well, my baby hated rice cereal too. She wasn't impressed with food until we moved onto veggies. She likes oatmeal though.

  • We quickly ditched the rice cereal for oatmeal, and even then, it took DD about two weeks before she actually seemed to like it.  And that was with the oatmeal mixed with either a fruit or veggie.  Now she loves her solids, most days.
  • My DD was the same way at first.  Eventually she "got" it though.

The one thing I did that I think helped get her along was to add veggies to the cereal.  Have you ever tasted plain rice cereal? Gross!  I don't blame her for spitting it out LOL!  So we just started adding a bit of sweet potato and she seemed to do a lot better with that.  I think she just wanted some flavor!

  • same experience for me at first, but I strayed away from the oatmeal and did fruits, and then gradually went back to oatmeal with a little fruit mixed in and now he eats oatmeal. He doens't love it yet, but he'll eat it. He makes the craziest faces lol
