Talk to me about the Recaro

While my mom is here we are in the process buying what we need for my parent's house in Cali that we can't borrow from my cousin (his youngest is almost 2 so there are a few things she's still using). One of those is a car seat (I will not be taking her carrier on the plane with me - just wearing her in my Mei tai). We want to go ahead and get a convertible that she can use for years while visiting her grandparents and I think we want the Recaro. I've been reading reviews that it doesn't fit in cars and not just small cars - vans, bigger sedans, etc. The issues seem to be height (can't see over it) and width (can't get it in).

If you have one, could you tell me what car you drive and any issues you may have? My mom has a Subaru Forrester (2009) and my dad usually just drives one of the cars on the lot which is usually some model year of a Forrester or sometimes a CRV size SUV. We will be purchasing online to have it shipped straight to Cali so I won't know if there are fit issues until it gets there.

Advice please. I'll take recommendations for car seats that aren't quite as big but same quality as well. Thanks!

Re: Talk to me about the Recaro

  • We have the Recaro Signo RF in a Honda Pilot behind the passenger seat.  It is quite a large seat (esp. RF), but DH can sit in the front passenger seat comfortably (he's 6' 1").  I am very short (5' 3"), but can see over it when checking on my right side while driving.  I do have to stretch up a little to see over, but nothing that I am not comfortable with.  DS loves it b/c it sits up so high that he doesn't mind RF b/c he can see the road out of the back windos, instead of just the back of the seat.  I think we will keep him RF until age 2.  FF, it fits MUCH better - I don't think it goes over the seat much (doesn't obstruct view).  KelleyA might chime in, as I believe she has the Recaro FF in her Honda Pilot (behind the drivers seat).

DH has a VW Passat (or is it Jetta?) Wagon.  Before we swtiched it to my car, he had the RS in his car RF in the middle.  He could still keep his seat back far enough to drive comfortably.  I don't think he had any viewing issues, but he is tall, so prob. could see around it, anyway.  I rarely drive his car - but I don't remember having trouble.  Now, he has a Combi Coccoro in his car (in the middle) b/c I originally got it thinking it would fit in my previous coupe.  With the bucket seats, it didn't work as well as I had hoped, and we broke down and got the Pilot.  The Coccoro gave DH some more room in his car, so he took it for his car.  Although DS will prob. grow out of it faster (it's a lot smaller), we like it b/c it's easier and lighter to wield around the airport when travelling. (sorry, I'm rambling!)

We have been really pleased with the RS.  It was between that and the Britax (Marathon?).  The only reason DH chose the RS is b/c he said the material on the seat was "softer" (it's velvety).  lol.

  • We had the Signo in DH's Mercedes C300 and it fit just fine.  We have since moved it into my old trailblazer and again it fits fine.  I am sure if it could fit in the C300 it could go just about anywhere.

  • We have the Signo rear-facing behind the driver's seat in my Explorer & B's Mazda Tribute (i.e., a Ford Escape).  B is 6'3" and has no problems in either car.  I wouldn't put it in the middle b/c o rear-view issues, and on the passenger side, it might block your view some, but B is able to fit just fine wit it behind the driver's seat, even in the smaller car.

  • We have the Signo in my car and I always used it behind the driver's seat, found it more comfy there than behind the passenger seat.  We also have a Mazda wagon and it fits just fine in there too. While the Recaro is a bit taller than some seats I found it to be more narrow and the head padding is the best I've seen on any car seat...which is critical for safety and kiddo comfort.

They have them at Baby's 1st and USA Baby if you want to try it out and see how it fits in your car...or their car.

  • I have our RS in an '06 BMW 3 series. When it was RF on the passenger side it completely blocked my view out of the side window. We moved it to the driver's side and I can see just fine with it RF or FF. I'm only 5 ft though so I think almost any seat taller than the snugride would've blocked my vision!

  • We have the Singo forward facing in the Mazda 6 and Escape no problems whatsoever.  He is in the middle though with the safety clips.
  • I think ours is the Signo and I had a regular VW Jetta and had no problems with it at all.  We've used it in my husband's truck (Dodge Mega Cab) and no problems. We did have to remove the head rest in the Jetta, but had to do that with our second car seat too.

We just got a VW Routan and I have no problems with it in there either.

I've not had any issues with seeing over it at all.
