1st Trimester

Do you/will you color your hair?

I didn't with my first two pgs, because everyone said it was so bad. I know it's a vain practice, and I don't do it for fun. I'm only 29 and if I go 9 months without coloring my hair I will look 60. I've had gray hair since I was 18.

I got a handout from my OB with do's/dont's and coloring hair was on the "it's okay" list.

Thoughts?

Re: Do you/will you color your hair?

  • I just asked my OB this yesterday.  I color my hair and let's just say that I'm way overdue for a touchup.  He said the risk is small, but that he would recommend I waited until after the baby is born.

    ::sigh::

You should see how awesome my 1.5 inch-long dark roots look right now with my otherwise blonde hair.

  • My OB said it was completely fine so I had my touchups done regularly in my last pregnancy and will this one too. My roots would look horrible. My OB only recommended waiting until the second trimester so the minute I reached 14 weeks last time, I was in the salon. :)
  • My doctor said highlights/lowlights are fine- they do not touch your scalp.  For base color, just to tell my colorist in advance and they can use vegetable based color instead of petroleum based. I am 38 and like 40% gray.  Even if I was going to have to use marker, I was coloring my hair!
  • I do it. Just make sure if you decide to go ahead and do it, the place is very well ventilated!

  • Most likely I will have to give in during 2nd Tri.  The grays are shining!

  • I will definitely continue to get my highlights done. Its one of those things that just makes me feel better. I did it last time too.

  • I just found that I'm pregnant and I am way over due for a colouring.  I'm scared to see how I will look after 9 months worth of grey hair!  I called my salon and they have a new L'Oreal product called INOA with no ammonia and no fumes...I'm definitely considering it.
  • I do heavy highlights and will be getting them done in a few months or so.  I'll probably opt out of using the salon dryer (which is easy to inhale a lot of hair chemistry cooking) and just let it process in open air.

And like PP said, little to no chemical gets on the skin for highlights.  I know because my hairstylist got a little on my neck one time.  It burned badly enough that I had to ask the stylist to wipe it off that spot immediately

  • I just did mine last night. My friend is a hair dresser and we did it in a well ventilated area of the house. Door was open, fans were blowing. I was against it in the beginning though.

  • I didn't with DD but you can bet your a$$ I am keeping up with my highlights this time. I have so much gray hair it isn't funny!

Dr had always said it was fine as long as it didn't touch the scalp but DH didn't want me to do it. So I didn't .

  • I am probably going to just get it glazed, so it darkens the highlights a little bit and blends in. Somehow all the hormones seem to make my hair dryer and blah. I'm hoping the glaze will help a little!

  • I don't color my hair, but in my packet the RE gave me at my last appointment it specifically stated that hair coloring is fine.

  • I colored my hair on Tuesday. My hairdresser says she colored hair and had her hair colored during two pregnancies so she is comfortable with it! I did my research and was comfortable with my decision.

  • I will definitely be coloring my hair. I am trying to wait until the 2nd tri but I need my roots done so bad it isn't funny. I highlighted with my first 2 pregnancies. My OB is pretty conservative though and wouldn't give me the definite 'go ahead'. I plan on letting my stylist know I'm pregnant in advance because I don't want to be in the salon with a bunch of other color or chemical processes going on.....
  • My OB said it was okay to get highlights, but to wait until the 2nd tri, soooooo I am patiently waiting and my roots are horrible. lol

  • I had my root color done last week. The books I have read say go for it, so I did!

  • Hey Robbysbride! I color my hair with a natural product instead of using the ones you can find at the pharmacy or at the hairsalon. You can find them in any health store or in the organic products of your grocery store. The natural ones dont have amonia or any strong smell.

  • My OB said it was totally fine.  I had my hair colored twice when I was pg with DD

  • Glad someone brought up organic color. I was thinking this would be ok. Might call the doctor tomorrow just to confirm. :)
  • I did with DD and I will again this time. My OB said it was fine.
  • I haven't yet, and I was planning to wait until 2nd tri... but we're traveling out of state for a wedding right when I hit 12 weeks... so I think I'll be coloring my hair the day before we leave town.  I'll be almost out of 1st tri, but I just can't go visit DH's family and attend the wedding without doing something about all my gray hairs!

  • I have extreme blonde highlights and my doc. said it was perfectly fine, even in the first tri as long as you are in a well ventillated area!
