How conservative are you about children's illness?

We had a playdate planned for this afternoon that was just cancelled and it got me thinking.

DD had a cold last week and her nose is still a tiny bit drippy and she has a trace of a cough left.  No fever, acting totally fine, etc.  Just the tail end of a standard cold.

I sent an email to my friend saying exactly what I just said above and she called me to say she was sorry, but she'd rather not take any chances.  I definitely respect her decision and I do feel that it was the right thing for me to mention it and give her the choice, but if it were the other way around I never would have cancelled.

Am I too lenient or is she a bit conservative?

I would probably do what she did.   I would prefer to prevent.

  • I don't think either of you would be wrong.  If we're about to go on a vacation or a holiday was coming up (like Father's Day which is big in my family) I would make the same call your friend did.  But on a normal day, I'd have gone ahead with the playdate.

This. With DS's issues (and mine), I like to prevent as much as possible.

  • I would have gone and just made sure to keep an eye on what the kids were doing, washing hands more often, etc.  Granted my kids are in school FT and have been since they were infants so I don't stress about this stuff as much - its one thing if your child has a fever, etc but a cold is a cold and just being out in public, you will pass people with colds so I don't stop life for a cold.

  • Normally I would not cancel (in the summer)... but I know other people would. As someone mentioned, if we were planning to go away, I may want to stay away.

DS2 has had his share of being sick (every two weeks for sure from October to April).... in the summer he's rarely sick though. So I might cancel if it was in the winter but would not cancel in the summer. Dr's think DS2 will outgrow it by 3, so possibly another really bad winter for us.
