Writing a check out to a 1yr old for b-day...

yay or nay

I say nay

Re: Writing a check out to a 1yr old for b-day...

  • I say nay... I'd opt for a savings bond over a check.

  • Yes, better chance of it going into a savings account.
  • the reason I say nay is because I don't have accounts for either of my girls.  Don't think I could cash a check I received with my daughters name.  A gift card has more thought IMO
  • I've cashed a few made out to my kids without problems.  I, however, opt for a GC or cash if I was giving a form of money.  I have yet to give any of the above.  If I'm slim on ideas, I go with something personalized.

Maybe a great time to set one up! My bank does them for as little at $10. I would much rather my kids have a college savings than a gift card for a toy that they don't need. Then again maybe we just have too much crap at my house already.

    you are absolutely right

  • If you get a check made out to your kiddo, print their name, sign your name and print your relationship under your name.  I prefer a check or cash.  Savings bonds are paying next to nothing.  I get better performance in a money market or investment.

  • I really think it depends.  If it is for friends - no.  If you don't want to get a gift, get a gift card for someplace or a savings bond as others have said.  For family, I think its fine. One of my SILs gives my kids a check for each birthday and Hanukkah and she knows we put it into the kids college fund.  She typically gets a small gift to go with it.

This! My bank lets me cash checks made out to my girls, but they know me. I'd much prefer a check for their savings than a toy to clutter up the playroom.
