Dr. Oz's bare minerals episode NBR

I recently ordered bare minerals make up, about a week ago, and it should be arriving any day now. Since then, a friend of mine told me she saw Dr. Oz a couple weeks ago, and he was saying that bare minerals-and any powdery make up in general-is terrible for your lungs. That it actually coats the inside of your lungs and can cause death...? Death sounds a little extreme to me, but I didn't personally see the episode. I've googled it, and cannot find it anywhere. I'm pretty upset because i've heard that the stuff works miracles, and i've wanted to try it for so long! Did anyone catch that episode of Oz? Or know where I can find it online? Thanks!

  • I wouldn't worry.  I use BM and I love it!!!  I wouldn't ever think of switching to, nor do I ever use any other kind of make up.  I started using it 5 years ago and don't have any kind of lung problems.

    But you'll LOVE the makeup!!!

  • Its the same principal as no baby powder b/c of respiratory issues.  Makes sense, but Dr Oz is very alarmist

  • Sorry didn't catch the episode. Yes, he was correct. If you've ever used mineral or powder based make-up there is a lot of make-up dust that flies around when you apply it. Therefore you inhale it as you apply.

Stinks too because Bare Minerals is the best make-up I have ever used. I haven't stopped using it yet Embarrassed.

EDIT: He was correct as far as the make-up being bad for your lungs. Death, um, IDK?

  • I would be pretty skeptical about this too.  I have bare minerals and love it, and it's not like it floats around in the air when you put it on.  You put it on the brush, shake the brush down a little, then put it on your face.  It goes on directly.

I guess some tiny particles could fly in the air and get in your nose, but I'd think the cillia (sp) in your nose would trap them before they went in your lungs.  Anyway, I'd have to see some actual evidence on this to believe it! it's not like baby poweder where you squirt it in the air and it floats around.

  • Ok ladies, thank you, I feel a bit better now, because I REALLY want to use it! At least for my baby shower and post delivery pics LOL! I'll just hold my breath as I apply it haha.
  • No I didn't see this. I love my Bare Minerals....
  • Dr. Oz also says you shouldn't touch reciept tape while pregnant.

Exactly the reason I barely ever watch his show, too annoying to listen to all the things I "must never" do. And touching receipt tape is pretty much inevitable for me, since I am a server at a restaurant...oh well I guess...haha

  • Dr. Oz tends to be a little extreme for me. I heard about this from a coworker, but didn't see it. I am not giving up my Bare Minerals it is great for my skin.

  • I saw this episode. If I remember right, he was basically saying that because cosmetic companies aren't required to list out the exact ingredients in their products, the powdered foundation products can contain mica which when inhaled in large amounts can do damage to your lungs. He was also referring to long term use and since these products are relatively new, it's hard to tell what the long term effects will be. After watching the show I looked on the bare minerals site and mica is listed in the ingredients of the foundation but just says 'may contain'. He also said something about construction workers have to wear a mask when around mica.

Considering I couldn't find one article or source that could agree with this opinion or come close to it, I pretty much dismissed his concerns and still use my makeup.

    Thanks for the facts! :)

  • While he may take an extreme stance on this, you definitely are breathing the stuff in. I used to wear bare minerals (never loved it, though and now I much prefer Origins foundation) and my contacts would be coated with the stuff. I couldn't tell, but I when I went to the eye doctor they would question me about what was on my contacts. I would have my eyes closed when applying it around my eyes of course and I never felt it go in my eyes, but it just goes to show that it does get everywhere. My countertops would get so messy from it too (and yes, I was using it properly).

  • I haven't watched it, but I have been using Bare Minerals exclusively for almost 5 years, and I am still alive! I find that prognosis a little extreme. You always hear these studies that everything can kill you - like microwave popcorn and things like that.

I'm sure if you use your makeup in a well ventilated area and aren't in a super hurry making the powder into a dust cloud that you will be alright!

  • Some of the stuff in it can cause lung cancers or other lung diseases....it's similar to stuff inahled by miners who are at high risk for black lung disease.  HOWEVER (and this is a big HOWEVER) you have to be exposed to like massive amounts before it's a real danger.  The 2 minutes you take to put on your Bare Minerals everyday is NOT going to give you black lung disease.  There is a major difference between a coal miner in it for 12 hours and everyday and you putting your makeup on.  So unless you are shoving that little canister up to your face every morning and inhaling like crazy, I'd stop worrying.

  • If you have too much loose powder makeup on the brush and apply it to your face, the excess powder does become airborne and you may breathe it in. Causing death is a bit extreme. I use Mary Kay loose powder and have learned not to put too much powder on the brush, and to swirl the brush in the top of the container to make sure the powder is even on the brush. This usually prevents excess powder becoming airborne. Don't fret it.

  • I love Bare Minerals. Previously I was using other dept store brands, but I have combination skin that still gets acne and is starting to age...what a combo!!! I really like how the Bare minerals just glides over my skin. I was scared it would clump with my oily skin, but I really haven't had any issues. I love the well rested eyes eyeshadow.https://www.allreviews.com/home/index...=656&Itemid=62 I have a Boston Terrier, a toddler and a baby due in 2 months, I need all the help I can get!

  • I am a makeup artist and I used that stuff all the time. I could see there being a problem if you are making a huge cloud of dust while using the product. After applying it to hundreds of people I have never experienced anything that I would be concerned about. You really dont use that much of the product and if applied correctly with the brush you will be fine :)
