I recently ordered bare minerals make up, about a week ago, and it should be arriving any day now. Since then, a friend of mine told me she saw Dr. Oz a couple weeks ago, and he was saying that bare minerals-and any powdery make up in general-is terrible for your lungs. That it actually coats the inside of your lungs and can cause death...? Death sounds a little extreme to me, but I didn't personally see the episode. I've googled it, and cannot find it anywhere. I'm pretty upset because i've heard that the stuff works miracles, and i've wanted to try it for so long! Did anyone catch that episode of Oz? Or know where I can find it online? Thanks!
Re: Dr. Oz's bare minerals episode NBR
I wouldn't worry. I use BM and I love it!!! I wouldn't ever think of switching to, nor do I ever use any other kind of make up. I started using it 5 years ago and don't have any kind of lung problems.
But you'll LOVE the makeup!!!
Sorry didn't catch the episode. Yes, he was correct. If you've ever used mineral or powder based make-up there is a lot of make-up dust that flies around when you apply it. Therefore you inhale it as you apply.
Stinks too because Bare Minerals is the best make-up I have ever used. I haven't stopped using it yet
.
EDIT: He was correct as far as the make-up being bad for your lungs. Death, um, IDK?
I would be pretty skeptical about this too. I have bare minerals and love it, and it's not like it floats around in the air when you put it on. You put it on the brush, shake the brush down a little, then put it on your face. It goes on directly.
I guess some tiny particles could fly in the air and get in your nose, but I'd think the cillia (sp) in your nose would trap them before they went in your lungs. Anyway, I'd have to see some actual evidence on this to believe it! it's not like baby poweder where you squirt it in the air and it floats around.

Exactly the reason I barely ever watch his show, too annoying to listen to all the things I "must never" do. And touching receipt tape is pretty much inevitable for me, since I am a server at a restaurant...oh well I guess...haha
I saw this episode. If I remember right, he was basically saying that because cosmetic companies aren't required to list out the exact ingredients in their products, the powdered foundation products can contain mica which when inhaled in large amounts can do damage to your lungs. He was also referring to long term use and since these products are relatively new, it's hard to tell what the long term effects will be. After watching the show I looked on the bare minerals site and mica is listed in the ingredients of the foundation but just says 'may contain'. He also said something about construction workers have to wear a mask when around mica.
Considering I couldn't find one article or source that could agree with this opinion or come close to it, I pretty much dismissed his concerns and still use my makeup.
Thanks for the facts!
I haven't watched it, but I have been using Bare Minerals exclusively for almost 5 years, and I am still alive! I find that prognosis a little extreme. You always hear these studies that everything can kill you - like microwave popcorn and things like that.
I'm sure if you use your makeup in a well ventilated area and aren't in a super hurry making the powder into a dust cloud that you will be alright!
