last question - activity items

I wasn't sure about what to add to the registry when it came to the activity items - bouncers, swings, gym mats, etc., so I added all of them.  A friend who was my coworker when we were both primary teachers told me that she uses them all like centers in her house.  When her son (now 10 months old) gets bored with one, she switches him to another.

I basically have the Fisher Price Cradle n Swing (made sure it has the a/c adapter and not just batteries, lol), the FP infant to toddler rocker, an Evenflo exersaucer, an FP jumperoo, and a Gymini playmat all on my registry.  I basically tried to choose the top-rated ones in each category, but then they would have all been on the higher-end price-wise.  For some, I chose the same brand but maybe a simpler one (like the basic Evenflo Exersaucer instead of the 3-in-1).  That way each one is at a different pricepoint.

I do have the space for them and I figured I could give a couple to my mom to keep at her house since she'll be the babysitter when I go back to work.  But, is it too much?  What were your experiences with these items?

Re: last question - activity items

  • we have two different types of bouncers (a rocker and one that turns into a chair), a swing, and we had an exersaucer. we did use all items. a friend of mine gave me her gym mat (excellent condition) and used that too. i loved them all and still have everything (minus the exersaucer). the exersaucer was used from 4 mths - 12 mths...mady loved it.

Get one of each, just know that not all babies like all activities. For example, she may like to be in the bouncer but hate the swing.

The centers is exactly what we do (and my mom when he's with her during the day). He pretty much spends all day going from one thing to another.

this exactly!!! we have a "play area" for the baby w/all the items.

  • I agree with one of each! Babies also like different things at different times. At first, Quinn only liked his activity mats (we had a Boppy mat and a FP) and his bouncer and hated his swing. Then, around 2 months, he loved the swing. At about 5 months or so, we started the center concept. The activity mats were the first things that he stopped using.
FWIW, all my new mommy friends and the ladies on the 0-3 board have been raving about the FP Rock and Play Sleeper  https://www.toysrus.com/product/index.jsp productId=3739296&fromRegistryNumber=45533085&product_skn=539018

  • I had everything and used it all! You never know what the baby will like and also everything has a different function.

  • Allison, I was looking at that item, but I guess I thought it was more for sleeping from the reviews and the pictures.
  • I had all of those things and used them all. if you have the room, get it all! Zoe hated the swing and loved the bouncer, but most kids are the opposite. She loved the playmat, the exersaucer and the jumparoo. I'm glad we had it all!
  • We had one of each as well set up in different rooms.  Right now B @ 4months is loving his jumper.  He didn't like the activity gym so much.

  • We had a swing, gymini thing, and bouncy seat.  They liked the swing and the gymini thing.  No go on the bouncy for my son, and my daughter was so-so on the bouncy seat.  We skipped the larger items (exersaucer, jumperoo) b/c we knew they had those at daycare, and since they both started daycare at 4 months, they wouldn't need them at home, too.  Both my kids actually spent a lot of time just on a blanket on the floor.  But the swing was indispensable in our house!!
  • Ditto everyone.

We did the Rainforest Jumperro, this bouncer: https://www.toysrus.com/product/index.jsp?productId=3160407, the Fisher Price Lamb cradle swing (on loan from my cousin), the Skip Hop farmyard activity mat, and a stationary walker/entertainment center (whatever it's called...I think the brand was Evenflo and it was called "Garden Party" or something like that? Love ALL the items and got use out of all them at different stages.

Also, I didn't register for these, but now that she's crawling I ended up getting the Skip Hop foam floor tiles and they have been a lifesaver. She won't stay confined on the little activity mat anymore and is not a fan of being enclosed in the playpen for more than a few minutes, so this has been essential to give her room to play, especially since we have tile floors. I would definitely consider registering for some foam floor tiles from whatever brand (the Skip Hop ones are really cute and I like the quality).

I also didn't register for a Bumbo seat but ended up buying one myself later. Before she was able to sit up on her own, this was a good way to prop her up so that she could play with her toys when she would get tired of tummy time.

  • Funny you mention the foam floor tiles, my cousins added it to my registry yesterday.  I wasn't sure about it, but I guess I'll keep it there for now.
