DD had a milk/soy intolerance. She was never tested but we switched her to a special formula and saw a change immediately. When I was pregnant with DS I asked her GI dr. to see if DS would have a greater chance of having this intolerance as well and the GI dr. said it's possible. He said if he acts fussy to not try other formulas but try the hypoallergenic. At any rate, DS is only two weeks old but I'm noticing similar symptoms to what DD had. Do I see his pedi first or go to the GI dr? And since they never officially tested DD's stool would I request for that this time? DS' stool isn't mucousy or bloody.

Re: If your LO has a milk/soy intolerance
I think if you have no problem putting him on special formula (Nutramigen or Allimentum for instance) and the cost it presents, go ahead and try one of them and see if it helps. If it does, there's kind of no need for tests unless you really are dying for the official diagnosis. If you'd rather not spend that much and commit to it, I'd call your ped or GI and see what tests can be run. If you do get the official diagnosis, you might end up getting the cost of formula paid for by insurance.
We just suspected symptoms and tried the formula, which worked. I kind of wish we had been diagnosed since it is so expensive, but oh well!
This was our experience too
When we told our ped she was glad we switched.
