RP: Sleep training suggestions?

DS has been a great sleeper up until recently.  He switched to one long nap a day and it has screwed him up at night.  He has been getting up in the middle of the night and is up for two hours or more.  He is just up and wants to play.  He sits in his crib and screams until DH or I come in.  We don't even have to hold him, as long as we are in the room he is happy.  He has also been waking up within an hour of going to bed.  We are thinking about trying to push his bedtime back a little since he is taking a long afternoon nap.  He currently goes to bed around 7:30 so we are thinking maybe 8 or 8:15.  Anyone have any suggestions?  I would like to get some books at the library too if anyone can suggest a book that helped them.  I would rather try something other than CIO first.  Thanks

Is LO super tired when he goes to sleep? Sometimes being over-tired can screw up night sleep and make it more interrupted with wake-ups. Is he getting enough daytime sleep?

The No Cry Sleep Solution (and the No Cry Nap Solution) is a good book - lots of ideas and tools that might help you out. I know one of the things in that book is putting LO to bed earlier (sometimes as early as 6pm), and making sure he's not overtired. Definitely worth checking out. Also the No Cry Nap Solution has a discussion about how to know when LO is ready for 1 nap a day - maybe your DS wasn't ready and just thinks that first bit of sleep during the night is his second nap?

    Good luck!

I'll look into the book.  He was taking two 45 minutes naps and now takes an hour and a half nap in the afternoon.  He hasn't been seeming tired when he goes to bed so we did a later bed time tonight.  He went down much better, but woke up again less than an hour later.

From what I've heard, the minimum amount of daytime sleep is 3 sleep cycles (each one being 45 minutes or so), so your LO is maybe one cycle short. Maybe try to get in one more 45 minute nap before bed? I don't know... These are just things I've been told, but I still struggle with the wake-up 45 minutes after putting my DD down at night. She goes back down easily, but every night she's up like clockwork, 45 minutes after falling asleep. Let me know if you find a solution!
