Babies: 0 - 3 Months

this has probably been asked a million times......

But what are your opinions on Enfamil v.s. Similac?

My LO was born yesterday, and I am trying my hardest to breastfeed, but it hurts so bad! Probably my own fault, because dummy me didnt prepare my nipples before she was born. I am going to try my hardest to get better at it and continue as long as I can. But just incase I give up or cant handle the pain I need to know which one will be best for her.

So far she has not had any problems keeping the colostrum down and she is passing urine and miconium (sp?) very well!

TIA ladies!

  • You don't need to prepare your nipples to breastfeed...so more than likely you should ask a lactation consultant to help you get a better latch. It hurt me to breastfeed until the lactation consultant came into my room and helped me correct his latch so that he was getting enough of my areola into his mouth.  I hope that is the same issue for you!  GL!  Sorry I don't have any info on formula, but I'm sure other posters will :)

  • our daycare uses enfamil so that is what we used with DS.

Hang in there.  The pain is very short term.  Go to target and get nipple soothies.

  • First off their is NOTHING you could have done to "prepare" your nipples beforehand so please don't beat yourself up! Are they sore or is it painful throughout the entire feeding? It is normal to have a slight pain right now when your LO first latches on but it should only last a few seconds. If it's painful the whole time it is most likely a bad latch. When your nipple comes out of her mouth does it look like the end of lipstick (creased edges, sorta pointy)? If so it's a bad latch and you need to talk to a lactaction consultant. Call your hospital they should have one there! If your not having latching problems then get some Lansinoh and apply after every feeding it will help with the soreness and also get some soothie gel pads they are amazing! Throw them in the fridge before use and that helps even more. Here is an awesome website that has any info you could ever need on BF!

BF is hard work and just remember you and your LO are both new to it so give yourself some time and it does ge easier and less painful!

  • Breastfeeding hurts. But it's worth it in my opinion. It stops hurting as much after a couple of weeks and then it only hurts when LO first latches. Now it doesn't hurt at all. Trust me, you will be glad you stuck it out. It's much cheaper to breastfeed.
  • Have you tried a nipple shield?

  • I firmly believe it's incredibly misleading to say that you should not be experiencing much nipple pain in the beginning, and if so that's due to an incorrect latch.

Alexandra had a dynamite latch and still does, but my GOD does it hurt for that initial five days - week. My nipples were so sore, and there was some scabbing but then when the scabs came off, then, THEN it was painless. Lanolin helped, and these little nipple soothie things that have like a rubbery gel type side and a fabric side, and the gel is SO cool and soothing to your sore nips. Those were a godsend.

  • Ditto what most moms have said on here. BF hurt me for a few weeks, there was even a cracked nipple in there, OW! I think we had an incorrect latch. But after a while the pain just went away and now it is totally fine. Just try to stick it out! I remember wincing and curling my toes it hurt so bad but I got through it somehow
